I was there a couple of days ago exploring the city with my dear friend. We drove there from NC. As we were about to pass this restaurant, we spotted a homeless man that was sitting next to the door in the 100 degree heat of the day. He spoke to us and asked was there anyway I would buy him a beef and potatoe potpie. I happily obliged and he continuously raved about how delicious they were and that we should try one. We had just had lunch so weren't hungry at the time. My friend and I walked inside and instead of a hello, the lady behind the counter mentioned as I looked at the potpies that they were all they had left. There were 4 in the case, only 2 with a label of what kind they were. So I asked did she have a steak and potato and she bluntly replied, what does it say... I told her 2 had no label. She seemed like I was a bother. Had the food been for me I would have left with no food. The experience of a restaurant is just as important to me s the food. But since it wasn't for me, I held my tongue and stepped out to see which one the guy preferred. She asked for here or to go and I mentioned it was for the homeless guy sitting outside of her door. She still seemed annoyed rather than happy to help me help someone in need. If she only knew how much the man raved to people passing by about how good their pies are, she may have given him one for free. $9.99 pie well spent in my book because of the huge smile it put on his face. Though it was very hot and humid he turned don my offer of a cold drink as he had a cup of drink with no ice. I would have rather spent that money at a place that was more friendly to their customers. It was a cute shop, smelled nice, food looked great... but being that you're in the south, one would have expected a very friendly and welcoming place. I always help anyone in need, even if they are asking for cash. This is the 1st person I've ever met that was homeless that asked for actual food. I hope if she sees him hanging around, her heart softens and she helps him eat something. We are all only a crisis or two from being in his position. Soften your heart and be kind to those who are spending their well earned money in your shop. Remember people can choose not to spend it with you.
I've changed my review from 1 to 3 stars because I didn't get a chance to taste their food, so i would like to leave room for that to be taken into consideration. And the owner responded with an apology which is much better customer service than was experienced at the shop. Thank you for...
Read moreI choose to stopped and eat at the Pie Society on our Road Trip (from Massachusetts to Florida) because it’s good reviews. Yesterday we had a chance to stop in Savannah and enjoy one of their pies.
THE PIE: We ordered Chicken with Thyme and a Custard Tart. The Chicken Pie was delicious, crunchy, tasty really really good. Custard Tart was not. Initially, we ordered Chicken Pot Pie, which unfortunately had no more and the wait for one coming out of the oven would be 40 minutes. I extremelly recommend this place because it is really famous for the quality of the pies and worth waiting in line. In your next visit to Savannah look for the Pie Society!
THE PLACE: The location is within the area of the City Market that is interesting. Inside the establishment there is a balcony, and 3 tables (two tables together on the left side, the balcony and a table on the right) and outside has two more tables. None of the tables or the balcony were cleaned in the 45 minutes we were there. This can not happen because cleaning is something crucial of any establishment. There are many things for sale inside the store, such as T-shirts, sweets which does not help in the decoration and makes the store even smaller. It would be good to remove these things for the store to be more pleasant to look at or at least dispose of the shirts in a way that helps in selling them. The menu was well written and clear so we could order. The pie of the month, Irish pie well explained. The display for the sweet pies was not much in sight as two tables were in front of it, so it would be better to leave only one table so that customers could see them.
THE SERVICE: The only employee in the store behind the counter was too busy and doing lots of things at the same time like: picking up orders, informing about pies, receiving payments, serving drinks. Doing the best she could, she obviously (like anyone else working alone in a extremely busy place) was having a hard time smiling, welcoming the customers. No famous establishment should treat its employees like that. Usually the employee gets nervous and often can not handle so many customers. In my turn to make the order she served us very well until a local guide came to pick up the order already made. I was waiting for long 6 minutes to pay with my order in front of me with many people behind me waiting in line until the rude local guide left after asking for napkins and other things. This would be avoided if there was a second employee to serve...
Read moreI regret to say that my experience here left a bad taste in my mouth, in more ways than one. I intentionally drove into town to experience, for the first time, their unique menu, last Sat. evening, around 6:45PM and we were the only two customers there. The male bartender seemed bothered by our mere presence when I nicely asked who I could place a food order from since nobody else was around after we had already stood there waiting for several minutes. Once the girl working there came out to the front counter, she too seemed a bit put off with having customers arrive as well. It felt as if it was an interruption to her or something. Then, after she gave me my food at the counter, I was paying for my meal when she informed me that she didn't have the correct amount of change owed to me. She closed her register and left it at that. She didn't ask me if I could help make change for her in order for me to get my correct change back. She just assumed I would not want my change back. I had already put a tip in the Tip Cup, setting on the counter, so I felt perplexed by her presumption. She than appeared annoyed when I still requested to get the change I was owed. Then she just kind of huffed at me and asked the male bartender to give her the change that she in turn handed over to me. She acted as if I had done something wrong when in fact, I had remained very pleasant and patient, and even kindly thanked her once she finally gave me my change. I wish I could say that was the end of this poor experience but sadly it's not. I carried the meat pie I had purchased over to one of the cute nooks they have available for dining. I was excited to try this warm British dish but instead found myself truly disappointed. My regular size Philly Cheese Steak Pie only had ONE small bite of meat in it, THREE small slices of bell pepper and FOUR big pieces of the outer peeling of an onion that most folks avoid adding to any recipe. With all that said, I'm hoping it was just an off day for each of them. It can happen to anyone, from time to time. Even so, I'm gonna have to let some sugnificant time pass before considering this dining...
