The most disappointing experience of a Ruth Chris Steakhouse, anywhere.
My mother and I dine with Ruth Chris 3-4 times a year in different cities. We are fond of the renowned elevated hospitality and exquisite food the Steakhouse is reputable for.
The experience we received in Savannah, GA, was so unfortunate, it was embarrassing to the guest we had with us. Our server consistently approached our table in a slothful, casual manner. The service was sluggish and without any sophistication. After ordering Tea, the server brought out the tea box and read the tea descriptions to himself, rather than presenting to the table to look/decide. When ordering our appetizers, our server stated “I am going to take care of that table over there and then I’ll get your order in”, motioning to the 20-top table adjacent to us. A runner delivered our Lobster Bisques , each Bisque both lukewarm and completely runny. It was the quality of a canned soup at best. A different server presented our Entrees, stating that our server was now too preoccupied to do so himself. As plateware still remained from appetizers, we had to ask for the items to be cleaned off our table so we could continue dining comfortably. As we dined, the birthday-celebration table next to ours actually concluded their meal quite hastily and visibly disappointed in the lack-luster service they received. Despite the extreme volume of the 20-top table that had us shouting to one another as if in a pub, we did our best to enjoy our entrees. We sat at our table for an additional 15 minutes with empty plates, as we watched our server pass our table back and forth. Our server acknowledged the empty plates during one of the passes, and still continued walking. My mother walked to the Host Stand to ask our table to be cleared. Our server finally approached our table to ask, “are you all done?”, referencing the empty plates. That was quite a disgraceful and frustrating comment. He removed the plateware and didn’t come back to our table for quite some time, leaving crumbs on our table and our water glasses empty. Not at all the service provided at every other Ruth Chris. As a Manager passed our table, we asked our table to be tidied once more. After waiting, we decide we’d rather conclude our dining now and go somewhere else. Only after receiving the bill from our server did our server attempt to clear the table, which clearly was pointless as we were now preparing to leave. I had been given a gift card from a different Ruth Chris location, that I decided to use for our Savannah meal. Our server returned to our table to ask for any activation paperwork, which I provided. Moments later, the Manager returns to our table to ask for activation paperwork, which I stated our Server already has it. The Manager leaves our table and then returns to state the balance of the giftcard is invalid, despite the clear activation receipt provided. Again, extremely embarrassing in front of our guest dining with us who had not been to Ruth Chris in over 20 years. The Manager was completely dull and negligent, as he refused to assist any further. My inconvenienced mother had to go out of her way to call the separate Ruth Chris location that gave us the gift card to check the balance. A different Manager approaches my mother to ask for another payment method while she is actively speaking on the phone, which was truly disgusting behavior at that point. The separate location was happy to oblige instantly and refreshed our card as they could see it hadn’t been used. Why the Savannah location couldn’t be bothered to do this as we sat in their (still extremely loud) restaurant baffles me.
Every single member of the staff we interacted with, were so unprofessional and passive. I have received more enjoyable service & atmosphere at the Waffle House. I’m not sure I’ll ever recommend this...
Read moreI have been to many steakhouses all over the USA, and specifically have been to Ruth Chris at other locations. I have had nothing short of phenomenal experiences at Ruth Chris. For this reason, while I was away for a work conference, I decided to go to the local Ruth Chris expecting exceptional food and service. Unfortunately, they fell very short. I am not sure if it was because I was solo the waiter barely paid attention to me since that means less tip with an overall less total check amount. Waiter was very friendly and pleasant, that is when he was actually present. The bread and salad was fresh and excellent. My steak was ordered medium, it came out pretty much well done (baffles me how a steakhouse can mess up the temperature of steak, given that it IS their expertise after all). The restaurant was empty when I got there, yet the pace of the service was unacceptable. It took almost 20-25 minutes for my steak to come out. I ordered dessert, chocolate explosion cake, which is typically a steakhouse staple. It took close to 20 minutes for it to come out (I understand they make it fresh). However, when it came out, it was cooked through completely and had no molten center. I wanted to tell my waiter, but again, was nowhere to be found, so I had to flag another waiter to tell my waiter to come. He apologized and said would get another one. I asked if it would take long, and he said he will try to grab one that is already being made. After about 10-15 minutes, the nexts one came out. This one, ALSO, was overdone, cooked through without any lava center. Totally unacceptable. At this point he offered to get another one, and I was fed up at this point so asked to just cancel that order and get me my check. I saw one of the hosts/managers walking around to random tables around me asking if everything was ok, but never stopped at my table (not sure how they decide who to go to). After the dessert issue, someone stopped by (did not even introduce who she was), who half apologetically apologized with no sincerity and said she took it off my check and just dropped the check off and walked away. Oh, and this is the FIRST steakhouse where my water cup was not refilled even ONCE. This is not the experience I expected from a respected and top notch steak house, from the lackadaisical service (waiter and manager), extremely slow pace despite not even being busy, to the steak not being done correct, and dessert being baked incorrectly not once but twice, and then lame response to that. Maybe this was a one off, as I have been to multiple other Ruth Chris steak houses and had a great experience in every regard from start to finish, so this was completely unacceptable. Oh, and the prix fixe menu is not worth it if you do substitutes. My waiter told me there would be just a small up charge for substitutions, but I basically got charged nearly the full amount for the substitutions (my substitutions did not deviate from the menu much), in which case I should just have ordered individually. He was not very clear about it despite me asking multiple times, but I did not have the energy or patience to argue the point after my lackluster experience. I wouldn't come to this specific location again.
UPDATE: I am switching my initial 1 star review to 4 stars. After my review, a manager from Ruth Chris called me and I missed the first call. She followed up the following. She was earnestly apologetic about my experience and assured me she would take steps to address all the issues brought up. She was gracious enough to also invite me back with gift card. Although my initial experience was bad, how a restaurant deals with it is just as important as they are sincerely striving to fix their shortcomings and for that reason I will update my...
Read moreWe dined at the Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Savannah, Georgia on January 3, 2025 to celebrate my birthday. I was excited for a memorable experience, but sadly, the evening fell short in nearly every way.
We had reservations for 6:45 PM and checked in at 6:30 PM. Despite being next in line to be seated, the hostess chose to seat a party of four with 7:00 PM reservations ahead of us. This was unacceptable, especially at a high-end restaurant. I brought it to the manager’s attention, but his indifference only made the situation worse, left a sour taste, setting a poor tone for the rest of the evening.
Our waiter was excellent and attentive, but the food did not match the service or justify the high price point. Both cocktails I ordered were weak and lacked the flavors described on the menu. After reading other reviews, I discovered this seems to be a common issue at this location.
The appetizers were incredibly disappointing. The calamari which came highly recommended, was the worse we’ve ever had. For $23, I expected perfectly cooked calamari, but it arrived cold, hard, and chewy, and clearly not fresh. The lobster bisque was lukewarm and too salty, making the $15 price tag hard to swallow. I only finished it to avoid wasting food.
The main courses were just as underwhelming. My steak, ordered medium, arrived well done, rendering it tough, flavorless and far from the quality expected for $67. My partner’s Cowboy Ribeye, priced at $78, was also poorly prepared. For that price, we expected premium-quality steaks, but the execution was no better than what you’d find at a mid-tier chain like LongHorn Steakhouse or Texas Roadhouse.
The side dishes were equally disappointing. Both the Cremini Mushrooms and Brussel Sprouts arrived cold, which made their $14 price tags unjustifiable. The only saving grace was the Au Gratin potatoes, which were served hot and fresh—likely because the cheese was broiled just before serving.
The one bright spot of the meal was the Crème Brulée for dessert. It was well-executed and enjoyable, but for a $340 meal, I expected far more than a single highlight. Adding to the disappointment was the inconsistency in service. After reading other reviews, I noticed some guests received a complimentary birthday cake slice, yet I did not receive anything special to mark my occasion.
Please note that we have previously dined at other Ruth’s Chris locations and at Morton’s Steakhouse, but overall, this was the worst fine dining experience we have ever had. The food was subpar, the service inconsistent, and the value was nonexistent. We felt completely robbed, especially for a special occasion like my birthday. I’ve also contacted corporate about this disappointing experience, and I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone. For the money we spent, there are far better options available. Save yourself the disappointment and celebrate elsewhere—you’ll be...
