First the pros: Prices are fair and you can often get a great deal when they run a sale. Lots of variety to choose from. Service is fast.
The con: This is a major one for me. As a person of color, I try very hard not to assume that a sales person is treating me differently due to my ethnicity. But each time I shop here, there are these little micro aggressions I pick up on from a few of the associates that leave me feeling like my presence is not appreciated or that I'm viewed as a loss prevention threat. I've worked retail for years and I know how certain groups of individuals are treated in contrast with other groups. It's never in your face but there is this undercurrent attitude - i.e. "why are you here"; "I need to keep an on eye this person"; preferential checkout services to a certain ethnic group although it was clear I was in the line first; or this particular rule applies to you but not the other customer.
It's rare that my family and I shop here because it's not a convenient location for us, but I like to treat my children to this store because they love the variety of art supplies. It is truly unfortunate that the few times we have shopped here, the experience is consistently the same.
As the saying goes, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." It's safe to say that'll I'll be choosing another art supply store in the future. I'm sure you won't miss my...
Read moreOne of my favorite art supply stores. Super convenient when I attended art school, now I make the drive whenever I need something quickly and/or it's hard to find. The staff are really helpful and informed about the products they sell.
They're also not looking to make you spend more money than you need to. They listen to what you're looking for and help you find the right product, even if it's a cheaper option than a more expensive alternative that doesn't suit your needs as well as the other. That's a really big deal when it comes to shopping there when you're first exploring art, if the prices of the materials are prohibitive to new learners then it staunches creativity.
Overall, if you're looking to explore different mediums this is a great place to start. Also, they have sales based on SCAD's semester schedule, so if you can handle crowds and don't need an employee's help narrowing down what you need, then that's when I would go.
(Secret hack- They have a lot of deals online where you can get special "online order only" discounts but you can pick it up in store. It's great when you're doing a big order and you know exactly what you're...
