After looking at the menu online for a quick bite nearby to go with some local dark beer I purchased earlier without breaking the bank I decided to stop by and pick up a couple of tacos and a meat filled quesadilla. The place was clean, quiet and had a pleasant atmosphere to it. Being from out of town (Los Angeles) and trusting Mexican food is not very much different from place to place, I placed my order with the heavy set fellow behind the register counter whom answered a few questions I had regarding the items as he struggle to accommodate his long hair under what seemed not the right size hair net. Paid him credit and requested the order to go. He mentioned it would be less than 5 minutes to be ready and bragged about being the best Mexican food place in town. When ready, my order was handed out in a paper bag which after checking it to make sure it was accurate I took and headed to the nearby hotel room I was staying. The smell of the food and the warmth of the bag on my hand as I carried it plus the thought of enjoying it with some chilled beer built greater anxiety as I approached the doorway of my room. As I freed the aluminum lined plate and with beer nearby it, I proceeded to enjoy this very aromatic meal. Well, to my surprise and after taking the first bite out of a taco I discovered the chicken meat on it was super dry. Yeap, very hard and dry as if cooked not fresh as when I ordered but more like hours before. Was not really very flavorful as I imagine since my mouth kept salivating massively in order to help break down the hard chicken pieces. There were guacamole, cilantro and some spicy salsa on it that masked the hardness of the chicken. I really was not impressed with the chicken tacos at all. They were somewhat close to chicken jerky tacos. I consumed most of the beer trying to wash down the tacos. Past the hard tacos and on to the quesadilla with half the beer I started and only after two tacos. Which by the way, were small sized as are street tacos back home. Also, half hearted about the medium size quesadilla but hoping for the best since marinated pork was the meat of choice I requested. This in fact, was a much better choice by far than the chicken. It was tender, juicy and definitely more flavorful than the tacos. Same topping for it as on the tacos with the exception of the spicy salsa that seemed more abundant and poured out everywhere as I took bite after bite and tried to ease the spiciness with some beer. All finished with the quesadilla and almost with the beer and now resting sitting up on the bed with the back against the bed's head rest pondered on the comment the big fellow at the taco place made about them being the best Mexican food place in town and how short the food fell from that comment. The following day, the effect of the extra salsa on the quesadilla help me clear out the system really good. Here the take away for me from this place. When ordering tacos avoid the chicken if not ask to try first to assure is freshly cooked to ensure flavor and tenderness. In regards to the quesadilla, advise them to go light on the salsa unless you enjoy it much before and the day after. Overall and in the future I will not be returning to this place nor recommending it either as far as quick, tasty and inexpensive which by the way, was not so much so by my account but perhaps so...
Read moreIncredibly rude! The food was good. My friend got two drinks and both were in plastic cups. He drank one and when we finished, wanted to take the other drink to go. We went up front and asked if they had a to-go cup. One guy said they were a dollar, then walked away. So we grabbed the paper coke cup and came to the register to pay for it. Another worker approached us, "SIR, you have to pay for that!" "Yes, that's what we are literally doing." He then tells my friend, "SIR, you can't go back there!" The cup was one step to the side of the register. My friend took one step, grabbed the cup, took another step back to the register. The guy then says again, "SIR! SIR, you can't go back there!" He wasn't back there. We said, no problem, we just wanted to buy the cup and the other employee said we could for a dollar. He then proceeded to say, "Look at the sign!" There was a sign off on our back shoulder that we didn't see. By the way, my friend is an 80 year old senior.
"Sorry, we didn't see the sign. We just want to pay for the cup and we can go." He continued to berate us. "But you can't go back there, READ THE SIGN!" again, sorry we didn't see it. It was literally one step to the right of the register. We grabbed it and are paying for it. AGAIN he says, "You can't come back here!" YES!!!! WE GOT IT!!!! We CAN NOT un-take that step. It happened, it's in the past. We didn't see the sign! He berated us AGAIN! Then they charged us $3.25 for an empty paper cup. He then sarcastically smiles and tells us to have a good night.
I come here at least once a month. I won't ever come back. And for $3.25 you bought a 1 star review. Terrible...
Read moreThis is the SLU location of Tacos Chukis, and I'm happy to say it's just as good as the Capitol Hill one
Obviously, the highlight is their house taco. It's a ridiculously good combination of ingredients that blend perfectly well together - from the pineapple, guacamole, salsa, and onions. The al pastor is just otherworldly - I can't properly describe how good it is even if I were to write an essay on it
What I got new this time was the quesadilla, this time with steak This was also pretty solid. The tortilla on the outside was very well charred, and had a great crispy bite. Like always, the guacamole, onions, and salsa inside are really good. A few small nitpicks, though. Unlike other quesadillas you might find, this was just a single tortilla folded in half. This made it a little bit more annoying to eat, but not overly so. The cheese was definitely there, but I thought there could've been more of it. Lastly, the steak felt a little bit too lean and kind of dry. The pork from the taco was much better
Like always, the price is incredibly cheap, especially with how much you're getting with the quesadilla - which can be a full meal by itself
Overall, this place is right up with its other Seattle locations, although I think I'll stick to getting the...
