Food was good, service not so much. Staff was friendly, but getting their attention to get a dessert or the check was difficult. I finished my cider, and I was not asked if I wanted another. (Mind you, I have an open tab, so why not ask? How much do you want to bring in?) As I said the food was good. I got a half rack of ribs and a side of red beans and rice. For dessert, a slice of pecan pie. The ribs could have used a rub prior to being cooked and sauced, I think the rub would have added a bit of missing spice that the sauce didn't have. I did like the hearty pieces of peppers and onions in the sauce, though. Red beans and rice, again, need some seasoning. This is supposed to be a southern-inspired restaurant. The hot sauce on the table added what the red beans and rice were lacking. The pecan pie was properly warmed in an oven (evident by some slight crust blackening), served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was a good finish to the meal. If you don't mind being left alone by servers at a full-service establishment, this place may be your cup of tea. While food is really nothing spectacular, it was still good.

The one star is for the peach cobbler dessert. It was one of the best cobblers I have had at a bbq restaurant. However, I wouldn't really consider this a bbq restaurant. The ribs tasted like they were cooked in an oven. There was no smoke or grill taste at all. The sauce tasted like reduced tomato paste. The ribs were also not trimmed (which isn't a deal killer) but shows the lack of enthusiasm for actually putting out a decent bbq product. You could only get brisket chopped and as a sandwich. It was as dreadful as the ribs. The coleslaw was passable but the potato salad was the worst tasting side I have had at any restaurant. There is no excuse for bbq this bad in this day and age. Anyone can watch youtube videos on how to bbq and get a pellet smoker to make it happen. If you are looking for anything resembling real bbq this is not the place for you.

OMG, I’m STILL thinking about that shrimp po boy and fried okra! Gall-DANG that was good! 😍 We really enjoyed bellying up to the bar to grab our grub (and what freaking great grub it was) while also having fun talking with the bartenders, servers, and owner. The food, atmosphere, and overall experience at Oak has served as one of our more enjoyable experiences in Telluride. Fingers crossed the space does not get re-vamped into some swank wine bar - or really, anything else - as word-on-the-street suggests! We didn’t discover an abundance of places in the mountain village or Telluride that struck the same combination of laid-back environment, attentive yet relaxed service, and really good food.

During our stay in Telluride, we stopped by The New Fat Alley BBQ in downtown—and we’re so glad we did! My husband and I ordered the full stack rib combo for $35, which came with two sides. We chose the okra and potato salad. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender, and the flavor underneath the sauce was absolutely delicious. I didn’t love the BBQ sauce—it was more tomato-based than what I’m used to (I’m from Texas, so I prefer tangy with a hint of sweet)—but it wasn’t bad at all. The potato salad was a hit for me, and my husband really enjoyed the okra.

One thing I appreciated was their variety of kids’ meal options—from pasta and burgers to ribs and more. Even though the kids’ menu isn’t listed, just ask—they do have one! Two of our kids got plain pasta with fresh parmesan (yes, I’ve got picky eaters!), and our 3-year-old had the kids’ pork rib with fries. All of them loved their food.

I wish I had taken pictures, but I was so hungry I dove right in once the food arrived—no regrets!

Shoutout to the gentleman who helped us at the register and later served us at our table (we visited on June 29th around 2:15 PM). I didn’t catch his name, but he was so friendly and patient, especially with it being our first time there. Excellent service!

Overall, we’d definitely come back the next time we’re...

OMG! I have been away from this place for way too long. When coming intoTelluride to eat out I must remember to go directly to Oak (the New Fat Alley) for almost anything on their eclectic and unique menu that just starts with BBQ, goes through dozens of fine dishes (meat and meatless), and any beverage you need.

Located at the bottom of Oak Street on Gondola Plaza, it's at the crossroads of the two towns, Telluride and Mountain Village. It moved there from up Oak St. about 10 years ago and has become the place to go for hearty, wonderful food ever since. Robbie and his staff of a dozen knowledgeable people will serve you inside or outside (in almost any weather).

My fave is the Potato and Black Bean Sauté or the Ziti and Black Beans but you can't go wrong with their best burgers in town, the ribs, the Po' Boy and anything on the menu. A Telluride legend and a great place to...
