Terrible service. We chose this place because we saw the 4.4 rating on Google Maps. We walked out over half an hour later having had 2 sips of beer and no food. Why? From what we could tell, the place was extremely understaffed and the staff was very inexperienced. When we walked in there were only two tables inside. Both appeared to have been there for a while. A lone tall server (let’s call him Sven because he had a Nordic accent) took our drinks and food orders. He was friendly enough and explained that there was a large party with a reservation coming. We ordered a drink and 3 main dishes in one go, and felt lucky that we got our orders in before the party had arrived. A few minutes later the large party of 10-12 people showed up. Another party of 5 walked inside shortly there after. Another server appeared and started to tend to the large party. We waited for another 10-15 minutes and did not get anything - no utensils, plates or drinks. Not even water. I raised my hand and signaled to Sven. He came over and I reminded him of our drinks. He apologized and headed to the bar and gave me a thumbs up as he appeared to be drafting a beer. He came over with the beer and I reminded him that my two companions had requested water. He went back and got the water. We became concerned that he forgot to put in our order. A few minutes later our fear was confirmed when he came by and asked us if we were ok with waiting another 40 minutes for our food. He explained that the large party had ordered food with their reservation. We shook our head and he quickly turned and went back toward the kitchen. A few minutes later our hopes of getting our food expedited were dashed when Sven showed up with our bill - with only one drink. He explained that he took our food off the bill. He did so without explaining in advance that our options were either wait or cancel the order. Oh well. It was a few minutes past 8 and most of the places in town close around 9:30. We had to abandon our drinks to look for an...
Read moreMy family and I have been coming to Lake Placid for nearly 30 years. We’ve seen dozens of restaurants open and close throughout our years here. There is definitely a lack of diversity when it comes to food in this town, so we decided to try Sol de Oro as we get a bit tired of American and Italian food. We were surprised at how empty the restaurant was on a Friday night, considering the restaurants on the busy part of Main Street have 45-60 minute waits MINIMUM on weekends. There was only one other group in the restaurant which isn’t always a great sign.
Our waiter (cannot recall his name unfortunately) and his family are working tirelessly to provide a great experience for their customers. He took the time to educate us on the variety of Peruvian dishes they have to offer and even was very knowledgeable about gluten free dishes as a few of us are celiac. He explained his mom is the chef and puts a lot of love into the dishes, which we learned was absolutely true.
Everyone in our group that ordered authentic Peruvian dishes absolutely loved it. Two people in the group ordered American dishes which they weren’t THRILLED with, but we told them it’s because they ordered wrong at a Peruvian restaurant! It’s easily become one of my new favorite meals in the town, and I wish I could bring in more clientele for them, as they absolutely deserve the attention/business. I look forward to our next visit there, and will encourage anyone I can to give it a try! I ordered the Bistek a lo pobre and two people ordered the arroz chaufa and both dishes...
Read moreGreat food (Peruvian and American), attentive service, nice drink selections, perfect location. I've been to Lake Placid a number of times and passed this place by, now it will be one of my go-to choices in town.
The ceviche entree was amazing, a large piece of whitefish (cut up into small pieces) with some Peruvian corn and plantain chips. I've had several different kinds of ceviche over the years, but usually as an appetizer. This was different, and I was happy to make a whole meal of it. The other Peruvian dishes looked good on the menu, so I'll have to return to try some of those. The more traditional bar food looked and smelled delicious as it walked by me, but I didn't try any. They had several beers on tap, including Miracle on Ice ale (how could they not have it, given the location?). And when I saw Pisco sour (a traditional Peruvian/South American drink) as a drink option on the chalkboard, I had to try one.
This is an excellent choice for a meal or snack before or after a hockey game, as it's right across the street from both Olympic rinks (and they're aware of the significance of those sites, and they knew who'd won the game I'd just watched before I came...
