The Lake Placid Olympic Museum is a small museum that packs a big punch. The museum does a great job capturing the history of both the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games that were held in Lake Placid. There are several artifacts from both Winter Olympics in the museum. Some of the coolest items in the museum include Olympic medals from several different Olympic games, Olympic pins, Olympic athlete uniforms, a bobsled simulator, and hockey gear from the 1932 games. The greatest of all items in the museum is definitely the hockey equipment from the 1980 Miracle On Ice Team. Near the “Miracle on Ice” team’s equipment is a silver medal given to the Soviet team that lost that year. Apparently, it was just left behind and no one ever claimed it. No one knows who it belongs to. The film on the 1980 US hockey team is also very good. Be sure to see the descriptive panels for the items in the museum, they are very well put together. After going through the museum make sure to see the Olympic speed skating track and Olympic hockey rink. The view from the restaurant and porch area of the Olympic center is one of the best in the village of Lake Placid. The museum is a must see for anyone visiting...
Read moreThe rinks were so nice, and I think they had the 1932 and 1980 Olympics here. One of my favorite parts there is when you enter and you could see the scoreboard from the game in 1980 where Soviet Union lost to the US with about 5 second left, and the score was 4-3, which was also really cool to see. We played games in the USA rink, the 1932 rink, and my favorite the 1980 rink. It was also really crowded there during hockey tournaments which is cool to see because you just like the whole entire town just full of hockey players. Overall, great experience and had a lot of fun playing some games there. It felt magical stepping on the 1980 rink just knowing that you’re stepping on the ice of one of the greatest hockey comebacks in history. Also how ironic of my team to score with like 5 secs left to win 3-2!! It was great and we made it to the championship but it our championship was for 3rd or 4th place, but we still one third because we lost 2 games before that, but thats still fine, i’m still really happy we won third, I would’ve never expected us to ever even make it on the podium there. I would love to go there again and play and visit the...
Read moreI've been to many cities that hosted Olympic events including Vancouver (2010), Munich (1972), Montreal (1976), Atlanta (1996), Calgary (1988), Salt Lake City (2002) and others. All have a museum of some sort and Lake Placid (1932 and 1980) is no exception.
Lake Placid is one of the smallest cities to host and it's clear even today that it would have been challenged with the huge event. Today, there are huge hotels and the roads have been improved but it is far from major transportation and I would imagine transportation was a big challenge.
The XIII Winter Games was held from February 13 to 24, 1980. Americans will best remember it for the men's hockey who unexpectedly won the gold medal, defeating the Soviet (not yet "Russia") team in the game now called the Miracle on Ice (multiple movies including one starring Kurt Russell). The museum has a big section specifically dedicated to this series and the original scoreboard is on display.
Lots of other memorabilia including uniforms, tickets, and such. What museum would be complete without a gift shop and this one is rather spendy. But how often does one visit little...
