The first two floors of this establishment have an authentic, rustic feel to them. It's a great atmosphere in the summer, but is also extremely cozy in the winter. The wall in the main dining room is plastered with college banners from near and far. The patio option in the summer is a nice touch, If you're just there for the beer you can always hang out at the tables outside and enjoy the view.
The newly added third floor was, in my opinion, a mistake. I understand that seating there is usually crazy and they certainly have a steady enough customer flow for a third floor, but unfortunately it looks like it was designed by a frustrated decorator with an even more frustrating budget. It is rather cheesy looking, and is in sharp contrast to the look and feel on the lower two floors. It's a good option if your party has small children because there is a built in play area. But awkwardly placed televisions at high volume, odd lighting, and a poor table arrangement will leave parties without children wondering why they chose to come here. I'd elect to wait longer for a table on the second floor.
The food itself is typically good quality, and is worth the extra dollar or two they might charge over competitors. There's a fairly wide variety when you consider that it's a pub, the menu size is a bit smaller than what you'd find at a typical chain restaurant. They use their Ubu in several of their recipes, which I thought was a nice touch. They're well known for their s'mores dessert option, which comes with your own mini fire -- no maintenance required.
The service at this place has been fifty-fifty with me. The first several times I went I was seated and served with no problems at all -- excellent. Staff were very attentive and polite. But more recently since they've hired new staff, I've certainly felt much less welcome. The seating staff can sometimes act as though you're bothering them by even presenting yourself in the waiting line. Waiters will sometimes walk past your table several times bearing nothing and making no eye contact. The worst offender was this taller gentleman was wearing a button up shirt with no undershirt on so his chest hair was visible. When he attempted to lead me to the third floor, I said I would prefer a table on the second floor even if it meant I had to wait a little longer. He literally rolled his eyes, walked back in the door (from the stairwell to the third or first floors) muttered something to the woman at the counter and sauntered away. Sorry I chose to spend my money here and I care about where I'll be seated. Sheesh.
My one standing complaint with this place is that they charge retail price for their own beer. That they brew. Right there. You can see it brewing. You'd think that you should be able to purchase beer AT LEAST on tap for much cheaper, but it's still around the standard $4 a beer you'd find most other places. Another disappointing case is that they sell their packaged beer at retail price as well.
Want to go home with a six pack of Ubu from our in-house brewery? That'll be $9.99. Did you forget to buy a six pack and remember at the gas station an hour away? No big deal, you can go inside and buy it for $9.99 when you pay for your gas.
Overall a good experience, with a few flaws that make you feel as though they've limited their potential in the name of making (or saving) a few bucks. Capitalism vs the...
Read moreFor years my husband and I would visit the pub after a day in the Adirondacks, but I was bummed about how today went. I completely understand the standards that restaurants have to follow because of Covid. I was actually very impressed by how they arranged their outdoor seating! But the lack of kindness really threw me for a loop today.
We called ahead and got our name on the list. A few minutes later we got a text saying that our table was ready. We showed up, and a storm was passing through and it started to downpour. They insisted on seating us and my parents at the only table that was not under the tent and did not have an umbrella. We asked if we could wait a few minutes for a table under the tent to clear, but they said no. Our choices were to sit at the table in the pouring rain, or be put at the end of the list and wait “a few hours” for a table under the tent. We had to ask someone to grab a bar towel to wipe down the soaking wet chairs before sitting.
So we sat at the table hoping the storm would pass, but it didn’t. It was pouring and we were all soaking wet. I felt really bad for my parents. A few tables emptied and were reseated- no one asked if we’d like to move. After seeing tables open up under the tent, we asked if we could move there, but the hostess said “no.” Our waitress on the other hand, said that she would “try to pull some strings.”
We had been sitting in the downpour for about 15 minutes. After seeing tables open up under the tent, and no one moving us, we decided to leave. On our way out our waitress saw us leaving and asked what was wrong. We explained and she told the hostess to put us at one of the free tables under the tent.
I get that restaurants may not be able to move people around to different tables for Covid reasons, but if it were pouring on my customers and there was a free table, I’d move them. The lack of kindness really...
Read moreWow! It hasn't always been easy finding good food in Lake Placid, so I am very grateful we picked here for dinner. There was no wait when we stopped in this past Sunday evening. We were seated on the 1st floor, near the bar. Our waiter was friendly and helpful, stopping by to check on us several times without being too intrusive. And the food - just wow! We all know food prices are up, so I understand restaurants charging more. Which is fine as long as it's worth it. And it absolutely was! Neither my husband nor I drink, so we tried a South of the Border mocktail instead. Delicious. Pretzel bites (made in house) perfect - not too doughy and not overdone. The cheese sauce was good, although I personally love a good beer cheese, this was fine. Meals were excellent. Their pizza is Detroit Style- one of my favorites - and I ordered the Buffalo Chicken. It really is large enough for 2-3 people to split. Dough (again made in house) was phenomenal. Crispy chicken that wasn't weird frozen product like at a lot of places. Really good. Hubby ordered the BBQ plate, which comes with brisket and ribs. I sampled some of the brisket; honestly as good or better than many BBQ places I have been. And the sauce - I wish they sold it! Ribs were fall off the bone tender. Great deal for the price as it also came with fries, coleslaw, and cornbread in addition to the huge amount of meat. Finally, strawberry shortcake for dessert. Homemade whipped cream and biscuit and you could tell. It was so good, I kept eating long after I should have stopped. We spent a little over $100 for all of this food plus drink including tax and tip. Well worth it. Highly...
