This is just an average restaurant that wants to rush you out the door to turnover their tables. I forgot how service sucks in America. We arrived a party of 4 and the lady at the front was very unwelcoming and took us to a table with four other people seated and had ordered drinks. She stood beside the table and said nothing. I’m looking at her like “what’s going on”. Then I looked over at the table and saw four chairs and figured we were sitting there. I said “oh you want us to sit here” as we sat down, she said “you don’t like it” “if you don’t like it, you move” I said no it’s ok. My family and I were uncomfortable. The people that were already seated were uncomfortable. The lady with the child moved her child away from us. The table wasn’t fun because everyone was already made uncomfortable, they didn’t expect or want us to be there. The couple on my right were texting each other talking about us. We got stared at the whole time. The same hostess lady went back and forth just starring at me. I asked my sister sitting next to me if she noticed and she said yes but she didn’t think I would notice. As soon as the grill was turn off and the chef rolled away, to-go boxes were brought out without asking… I made it a point to finish my meal and drink the bottle of wine. Zero for service, food was average, yum yum sauce was watered down and mixed with thousand island dressing. Soup was water with floating mushrooms… everyone at the table turned it down. Sushi was decent. Other guests that came in to have dinner stared at us… the only time I feel out of place and stared at so much is when im traveling overseas.

I haven't been to Sumo in over a decade. Just to put into perspective how long this place has been open. My son wanted to celebrate his 11th birthday dinner at a hibachi restaurant so I called to schedule reservations. My party and I arrived a few minutes early and were seated right away. We came on a Wednesday night and they were well staffed. They reserved a designated a room for my party. The rooms are not entirely private as the walls do not go up to the ceiling. It gives you a private yet open feeling which I prefer. The inside looks like it's been renovated in the recent years. It was pretty clean and minimalistic inside. Our waitress Melissa (spelled differently), was so sweet, attentative and offered great service. Our chef Petey, was so funny! He made a pun out of everything he was cooking. He was very talented behind the grill. It was true entertainment. He was a blast! Our service quality from the time I made my reservation to the time we received our check was superb. The food was delicious. We ordered appetizers, soups, salads, sushi, hibachi of all kind from chicken, filet mignon and shrimp. Even the price was reasonable. I was shocked by the bill considering I had 7 people who ordered a lot. I thought it was a great deal. They all came over a sang happy birthday to my son and gave him a dessert with candles. It was very cool. I don't remember if the dessert was on my bill but regardless I loved how all the staff came over to sing. Overall, this will be my go to spot for hibachi!

We had our work Christmas party here last year but it was only about 15 people. This year we've grown tremendously to about 45 attending. Which left a bit of a daunting task to find a place not already booked or that was willing to take on that large of a reservation Decided to check with Sumo after being turned down by several other establishments. Although they seemed a little scared of that big of a group, they happily took the reservation. I too was a little nervous about how things would go but they surpassed my expectations. The staff exhibited exceptional efficiency, amiability, and a flair for entertaining, leaving us thoroughly impressed. Four tables and four cooks orchestrated the evening seamlessly, supported by very attentive staff members attending to our needs throughout the event. Of course the food was absolutely amazing. You truly outdid yourselves, contributing significantly to the resounding success of our Christmas celebration. Thank you from Underground Connections

It's definitely hibachi. And it's definitely a steak house. But it makes me feel sad for first time hibachi guests that probably leave thinking this is what a cool/great hibachi place is. It is not. Ever since I've been little going to a hibachi restaurant is something that is entertaining. The chef's have an inspiring talent to entertain the guests with their skills while embracing the table in a funny environment. Not only did our chef not do any of the expected hibachi rituals, but the chef behind him was lacking and neither of them communicated but for a very few words with the guests.

On top of this. Our experience was bad. They messed up an order of one of the guests in our party. And instead of making us feel better and showing concern for their guests, the chef repeatedly made the one who's order got messed up feel uncomfortable by pointing at her and telling her multiple times that she was not getting any food from the chef. Horrible. We just wanted to leave, felt uncomfortable and bad for the other's who we could tell it was their first time.

If you have never gone to a hibachi restaurant before, this place is not the place to go. Go to Shogun or someplace where they at least have a sense of humor and want to treat their guests with respect. I'm pretty sure nobody at our table would ever return to this place.

That being said, the food was similar flavored, the rice was not a good of quality as other's in town. The sauce bowls we're tiny cups and lacking in the yum-yum department. Fried rice costs extra. Cabbage is served instead of brussel sprouts. Soup was okay. But the service was horrible. They even charged us for the food they messed up on. Plates are small Picadilly plates. Sushi had green lettuce sticking out of it. The salad was standard, dressing was normal.

Food was standard hibachi, no complaints about the taste from me. But I strongly feel that hibachi is about the experience and this place left me feeling angry. We didn't even want to finish eating our food. Just...

If you want to be discriminated do not go here. The moment we got in the restaurant it was horrible. Which was shocking because we been here one time before it was a bit better. But we went on August 16 for our son bday. From the beginning the person on the waitlist didn't write my husband's name down until he wrote a group of white people that came in after us. When we were already there before them. My husband had to ask the guy did you write my name down and he proceeded to say oh i forgot. Then we wait to be seated which is fine because we didn't have reservations but the other group of 13 that came in after us got to be seated first. We wait get brought to the back of the restaurant where the fan above the gril didn't work we had grease flying everywhere in our water and everything smoke all on our faces. Another group came in to be seated after us their drinks and soup and salad was handed to them as soon as they sat down ours took about 30 minutes. Then they get their food cooked and they came in after us mind you. It took them 1 hour for our cook to get to us. And he shows up saying a very racist unnecessary joke. His words "want to know why im late" because the border is closed" like what mind you we are 10 people some of us are fully hispanic some are black. We ignore it didn't respond or laugh because it was nasty and disrespectful and he saids it again.. like it was so disrespectful and disgusting very tasteless. The restaurant closes at 9:30 we had just got our food around 9:25 and they come rushing us asking if we want boxes. It was a very un enjoyable experience for us. the waitress was very rude and didn't write stuff down so we had to keep requesting stuff she didn't write down. Just overall all a very un pleasant experience....

We decided to try a new restaurant tonight. We had a small wait to get in, that was not a problem. Once we sat down and ordered it was almost an hour before our hibachi food came out. I myself am white and have a African American husband and three kids one of which is a baby. We were sitting with a white family. The waitress would not reach and hand us anything. She walked up and handed drinks to the white family. Then she stood on the other side of the grill and held our drinks to her body and would not hand them to us. It was so bad that the other family was angry about it. This happened with everything, our food, silverware, salad, soup. She also removed the white families dishes, but not ours almost the entire meal. She refilled our waters once but never refilled my kids sodas. The chef was great, I will say that. So our check seamed high. I went to add a tip. Keep in mind I always tip really well at hibachi because of the show. When I went to add the tip I noticed that an 18% gratuity had been added. This was not disclosed. I looked at the menu and it said for parties of 6 or more they do. We did not have six people and asked and was told by the hostess sometimes the server does this for convenience. I told her that was illegal without notice or approval. She offered to remove it. I said no, but I would have tipped significantly higher probably twice that had she not done that. I asked the white family on the way out if they did that to them, and they said they did not. I think she did it because of my families ethnicity. Really bad experience, I will never go there again. I would not recommend if you are not white. It’s too bad the chef is there he was always my favorite even when he worked at...
