There are only a handful of things that I have unshakably strong opinions about, but I will die on the hill that Baked & Wired has the best cupcakes (or should I say cake cups) in DC. They certainly face stiff competition from Georgetown Cupcake, Sprinkles, Bakeshop, and the many other bakeries in this neighborhood, but, while I love them all, none can hold a candle to Baked & Wired. Their cupcakes are massive and probably a meal in and of themselves, but they're so delicious that it will take every ounce of self-control to not devour them in one bite and then immediately spring up to order another one. While their cupcakes are rich, decadent, and satisfying to any sweet tooth, they're also not overwhelming. Their dirty chai and carrot cake, in particular, carry a more subtle sweetness that allows you to eat the entire cupcake without an ounce of heaviness or a sugar-induced craze afterward. I'm also not a huge frosting person, and I appreciate that Baked & Wired's cupcakes have the perfect balance for me, with 80% cake and 20% frosting.
They have a fantastic selection of flavors, ranging from your traditional chocolate and vanilla to unique combinations like dirty chai, pumpkin, or flapjack (a good ol' maple and bacon cupcake). My go-to is the dirty chai, both because I'm obsessed with cinnamon, spice, and everything nice, but also because the slightly bitter kick from the espresso helps to mellow out the sugar. Other fan favorites amongst my friends include the red velvet and coconut, and I'm in love with the carrot cake. They have one vegan option and one gluten-free option, which is great for all my friends with dietary restrictions (although I will admit that if everyone in your group is vegan and/or gluten-free, it might be better to stop by somewhere with a larger diversity of options).
If you still have time after standing in the (well-deserved and fast-moving) block-long line outside of Baked & Wired, I definitely recommend pausing to sit in the store to enjoy your coffee, cupcakes, and other sweet delights. The store is a bit crowded, so I wouldn't recommend it for studying or anything that requires intense focus, but it's upbeat and lively, making it a great spot to relax and chat while enjoying some...
Read moreMy husband & I are huge fans of Baked & Wired, and always stop in for coffee and cupcakes when we're in the area, so when we decided to have our wedding in DC, we immediately knew that we wanted our dessert to be made by them. We did a taste test with cupcakes about a year in advance, chose our flavors, and initially wanted a cupcake tower, but ended up going with a 3 separate piece cake setup, with 3 different flavors, which ended up being the perfect choice for what we had envisioned for our dessert options. We kept in contact with the team at Baked & Wired throughout our entire planning, and not only were they always responsive to our questions/concerns, but they were also so kind and helpful with suggestions and advice. On the day of our wedding, they delivered our cakes early, upon request, so that our planners would have more than enough time to decorate them, and the delivery staff was extremely careful and professional. All 3 cakes were made perfectly, with just the right amount of creaminess and moistness, all 3 flavors tasted amazing, and all of our wedding guests absolutely loved their pieces. My husband and I are so happy we chose Baked & Wired for our wedding cake(s) and we couldn’t be more satisfied with how they turned out, as well as the customer service leading up to our big day. I highly recommend this company for all your baked goods needs, and we look forward to stopping by again for some more cupcakes the next time we're back in...
Read moreFood & coffee pretty good. Had the ham & cheese biscuit, which texture & size are similar to red lobster cheddar bay biscuits without garlic & parsley, then adding ham. Ask for them warmed, they're much better that way. Latte was velvety smooth, no sweetener needed. Perfectly roasted & brewed. Customer service is fiercely lacking. We'd never been there so we asked what was good. They were out of a lot of things. Unfortunately to find out we had to pry it from the guy's mouth. He was unhelpful, & annoyed when asked questions. He forgot to put a name on my latte, and when I asked him how I knew my latte.was done got a little loud with me saying just wait over there. I mean, I understand I need to wait over there, but is there a generic name they use for ordering on the food side or will they just call what I ordered out? How's this work? Baristas will ignore you, which made it more difficult to know when my order was ready. The gross thing is the barista handing out drinks & using the espresso machine kept touching her face, nose, hair & glasses all while touching everyone's drinks. 🤢 We ate/drank everything and it tasted good, but it was difficult to get the images of how it was made out of our heads. Atmosphere has a fun funky hipster vibe. But most of the chairs are not very comfortable. The tiny...
