The Hungry Pig: Where Bui Vien’s Chaos Meets a Culinary Twist
Tucked away in the labyrinthine alleys behind the ever-buzzing Bui Vien Walking Street, The Hungry Pig isn’t a café you stumble upon — it’s one you discover. Hidden behind the raucous hum of backpacker bars and street music, this unassuming spot has earned a reputation that quietly travels through word of mouth.
This café isn’t chasing authenticity in the traditional sense. Instead, it delights in reinvention — a playful collision of East and West. Think King Kong meets Godzilla, but on a plate. The result is familiar comfort food with an unexpected Asian edge — bold, inventive, and surprisingly harmonious.
The menu reads like a witty conversation between culinary cultures. Forget about finding your standard Bodega Sandwich or Molesey Beef-Dripped Chippy. Here, the creativity lies not just in the recipes but in the names themselves — clever, tongue-in-cheek, and impossible to resist.
Here’s what stood out during my visit:
All Day English Breakfast – crafted by someone who truly understands that the way to a man’s heart is undeniably through his stomach.
Fish & Chips – a nostalgic nod to home, though I found myself longing for those traditional beef drippings (curse you, healthy living!).
Hamlette — bitten by the Bard, yet a charlatan in the written arts; but, I dare say, a master in the divine art of cookery.
Pig Lebowski – hearty, unapologetic, and undoubtedly made by Dudes for Dudes.
Notorious P.I.G. – because some dishes don’t just speak; they declare.
Each plate carried that satisfying blend of humour and heart — a café that doesn’t take itself too seriously yet delivers on every bite.
So, next time you’re wandering through the chaotic charm of Bui Vien, take a detour down its quieter corners. There you’ll find The Hungry Pig — a tiny nook where fusion finds its fun, and brekkies might just last all...
Read moreI’m overwhelmed at the low key vibe yet amazing food and customer service. I was nearly going to stop at another burger joint on our way as my son was just toooooo hungry. And I’m telling you I’m so glad we persevered. The place as you enter looks narrow and gives away no secrets. It’s fairly plain to look at (Saigon is our last stop and this is our first eatery here) But hot digging dog the food and staff are amazing. I was worried about ordering the cheery burger as so often bbq sauce in burgers is over used. It was just the right amount and combined with the maple flavoured bacon with the right amount of chewy crunch. Sooooo delicious. My son had the cheese burger without mayo and lettuce and thoroughly ate it up. He was also well surprised by the access to Heinz tomato ketchup as tomato sauce when we’ve had it over here has been quite different. It’s our second burger in. Vietnam and I’m telling you it’s beater than many burgers I’ve had in Aus. The icy beer with stubby cooler (a first in Vietnam for us) was a welcome addition. As I’m not a fan of warm beer. While the decor is minimal the artwork that adorns the walls soothes my artistic heart. 💜
So if you are in search of some delicious burger times, do try here. The laneway is a joy to...
Read moreYet once again, the Hungry Pig continue to amaze me with their food and hospitality, so here I am, writing this review for you all to come and enjoy the food.
Nestled in a small alley of the First district, just shy from the foreigner street/walking street of Bui Vien, the restaurant offers a variety of western food and breakfast, mostly renown for its burger and English breakfast.
The food is actually GREATTTTT with good value ratio to it as well. I'm in love with the bacon chilli jam burger, with the motto 'Bacon make you sexy', and today I got to try out the fish and chips. 5 out of 5 star, no drama. Picture included.
Both the staffs and the owner have great personality and lighthearted as well who would sit down, chat with you or listen to your travelling stories. And guess what, the cute menu board is actually hand drawn by them and changes every couple days as well.
All in all, a great experience, would continue to be a patron for the forseenable future, aka as long as I'm still alive.
Best regard, your friendly friend from across :)
