Horse Bath

Underneath the cliff-side of Monk's Hill (Mönchsberg) sits the largest of the two surviving Medieval horse baths in Salzburg which, back in the Middle Ages, were analogues to today's car washes.

Both of Salzburg's horse bath fountains are fed by ancient underground canals that have been in use since Roman times and revamped repeatedly during the 700s and 1200s. This magnificent high baroque watering pond makes for a fabulous attraction nearby the former royal stables, located in what is now the Großes Festspielhaus (Large Festival House) just across the street on Hofstallgasse. The Prince Archbishop's horses were cooled, washed off and watered here after their ceremonial parades. At the center of the pond, a dramatic sculpture of a dynamic horse being restrained by its handler is backed by a great sequence of frescoes portraying horses in various states of...

"Pferdeschwemme"-Platz: film and Sound of Music Fans might remember that place from the movie which can be seen in one Montage scenes while Maria is going shopping and walking with the children in/around Salzburg.

Beware: compared with the movie and today: it has a lot cars/traffic today so it doesn't look that romantic like in the movie. Maybe you should try in the summer time to visiting it very early in the morning before people going to work.

Otherwise: its historical...

The Pferdeschwemme is one of the two preserved horse "baths" in Salzburg's old town. In the middle of the fountain is a large sculpture of a prancing horse. Just behind the fountain is half a dozen horse themed murals. All of this is at the base of Mönchsberg cliff walls as a spectacularly backdrop. Highly photogenic

If you are a fan of The Sound of Music, then this is a site to visit. This is where Maria and the kids walk through. Unfortunately, the place is closed due to construction but they did a good job trying to keep to original feel to the area. Taking off one star just for the fact that construction blocked the view.
