Croatia is a member of the European Union, and I expected it to follow the same accessibility standards as other EU countries. However, at certain tourist sites, it seems that only Croatian guides are allowed to accompany their guests inside. We are not here for leisure — we are working.
Today, one of my tour group members, who is hearing impaired, entered the Dubrovnik City Walls. As his guide and interpreter, I tried to follow him, as I would in other EU countries. But I was told to go back and buy a ticket.
While I was stopped at the gate, my guest continued walking inside, unaware of what was happening. As a result, he went missing, and I couldn’t find him until nearly 3 PM. This caused enormous stress and could have ended very badly.
If such practices are allowed, then perhaps Croatia should reconsider its position in the EU. Denying access to professional guides who are assisting disabled travelers is not acceptable by European or international standards.
I was lucky that two kind women from a travel agency near the Onofrio Fountain helped me sincerely and supported me when no one else did. I am very grateful to them.
The Dubrovnik City Walls already charge a very high entrance fee. On top of that, I feel there is a lack of openness toward foreign professionals. If this is the policy, then perhaps all Croatian guides traveling abroad should also be required to pay for entry everywhere they go.
If anything had happened to my guest during this time, I would have taken legal action — through the travel agency — against the gate staff who denied me entry.
Please take this matter seriously. This is not just about one guide — it’s about the dignity and rights of all travelers and professionals working...
Read moreFirst off, I will say that the staff are very friendly and I have nothing against them personally. The facility is very nice but the things that have lowered my opinion drastically as are follows:
They have very few leaflets/maps about what to do in Dubrovnik - in the old town and in the city in general.
The staff aren't kept informed of offers, deals, updated pricing of the various venues of the old town such as the wall
The second point being proved when I was told my valid uk student card would get me a vastly reduced price on entry of the old town wall. But when I got to the wall I was told by a very frustrated employee that my student card is not valid and that I must have a European student card. Even after proving that the university I study at as a full time student is in the UK, and that my card is valid, was still forced to pay the full adult price.
Overall, the facility is great for getting a map/directions or finding bus times, but any other information you are better off using Google or going to the...

Who seriously needs some lessons in customer service, we came in looking for help as we couldn’t find our tour guide for a trip we’d booked onto to which she replied was “you should’ve been on time” (we were)
Gave us dogs abuse about how professional they were and that they were there for 20 minutes (okay sure) we asked if she knew what direction they went in to see if we could try and follow on from there, literally nothing from her, so not only we missed out on our trip but her attitude towards us completely put a dampener on our whole morning, if the people who were taking the tour were so professional, maybe she should take some lessons from them because she certainly isn’t. Deserves nothing but a slap if that’s how she wants to treat visitors...
