Read moreI enjoyed several opera and ballet performances here. As a keen classical music fan, I would say, the musicians, singers and dancers performed at world-class level. Giving 3 stars mainly because I’ve got hugely disappointed by the premiere of Mozart’s “Idomeneo”. The stage setting was way too grim and even repulsive. To myself, Mozart is a lyric and tender and elegant composer. His music must not be associated with violence, madness and horror (which was the case on today’s performance, when the stage settings showed a weird hybrid of a madhouse and a concentration camp).
Also, to my taste, this opera house is the least favourite amongst its other “siblings” - Satvovske and Narodni divadlo. The seats feel too dense, and the general spirit of the other 2 theatres is somewhat more pleasant.
It really pains me to give 3 stars only. I was so excited about the premiere of a rarely staged Mozart’s opera, but the stage settings brutally crushed my dreams. It was the very first time I left the performance before the end of the show. Because the atmosphere created on the stage was really dark and depressing. I understand, this is the story of this opera based on a greek tragedy, but still it was rather too much and doesn’t match at all the “Mozart spirit” as I see it.
I would appreciate a possibility to rate each performance individually, rather than giving an average score. As the other operas staged here were really amazing.

Read moreDuring our holiday in Czechia, my wife and I had the pleasure of visiting the State Opera in Prague — and what a treat it was! From the moment we approached the building, we were completely wowed by its stunning architecture. Truly a sight to behold!
Stepping inside, our mouths dropped — the elegance and opulence of the decor took our breath away. The service was impeccable, from the cloakroom to the lovely staff who guided us to our seats. It was all so smooth and welcoming.
As for the opera itself, sublime would be an understatement. The performance was captivating, and the historic yet splendid surroundings only made the experience even more magical. The interim sessions were fantastic too, with a delightful selection of refreshments and snacks to keep us fuelled during the breaks.
I simply cannot wait to return and enjoy another unforgettable opera evening with my wife. If you’re in Prague, this is an experience you don’t...
