Review of Ethical Trekking for Everest Base Camp (EBC) (08/15-08/26 2025) and subsequent stay in Pokhara
Ethical Trekking was recommended to my brother and I by close family who had recently enjoyed their experience with them. Our Everest Trek was unfortunately delayed by a few days due to unexpected health complications. Krishna, the Ethical Trekking president, along with our guide and porter, arrived in Khatmandu to support us while we figured out what to do next. Their expertise in finding affordable, quality trekking equipment and their flexibility in guiding us through the circumstance was commendable.
Do not underestimate EBC. It is a highly strenuous trek, even those in great shape can suffer from severe altitude sickness. Our guide Bishnu and porter Rupak worked tirelessly to ensure that we were comfortable and our headaches were manageable. They were both extremely friendly and informative throughout the trek. On the day of our base camp visit, Bishnu had to take somebody struggling from altitude sickness 10 km down to a lower camp in the middle of the night. Despite this and being completely sleep deprived, he still returned and helped me summit Kala Patthar the next morning, a nearby summit with gorgeous views of Everest.
Upon returning to khatmandu, Krishna offered to host me at his home in Pokhara. From there, I was able to paraglide, swim in the river, experience the nightlife, and enjoy local cuisine with Rupak and his friends. Krishna organized permits and transportation for me to solo trek to Mardi Himal base camp, which I highly recommend for people of all ages (take the local bus if you decide to do). Krishna was able to organize anything else I wanted to do within a day. This trip with Ethical Trekking is at the top of my list of travel experiences. Highly recommend them, and ask for Bishnu + Rupak as your...

Our experience with Ethical Trekking was nothing short of exceptional. We arrived in Pokhara with little to no plan, and knew it wasn’t the best season for trekking. Once we walked into the Ethical Trekking office, all our doubts were alleviated and we felt supported and given options that were right for us and our goals! It definitely wasn’t a one size fits all approach, Krishna and Maila worked with us to develop a plan that worked for us - our timeline, fitness and what we wanted out of the experience.
Krishna was professional, helpful and hugely knowledgeable which was essential in planning a trek confidently. He also helped us to adjust the plan to suit our budget, using local buses instead of private jeeps to get to the start of the circuit.
We ended up doing the Manaslu Circuit over twelve days and it was just amazing. The scenery and challenge was exactly what we wanted, it is such a special place in the world. As well as the circuit we did some amazing day walks to Pungyen Monastey and the Tibet Border. All of the guest houses and food stops organized by Maila were great and the days were well planned and executed.
Maila’s kindness, professionalism, knowledge, care and sense of fun really made our trip so special. He is so experienced and we felt in very safe hands the entire time. We always felt looked after and thought about, and we all had a lot of laughs and fun along the way. His ability to understand what we needed in the moment and deliver was second to none, whether that was a cup of tea, extra motivation up a hill or some time walking alone.
I can’t reccomend Ethical Trekking, and especially Maila, enough. We hope to be back in the Himalaya again one day soon and will definitely be returning to this...
