When selling your items to half priced books(HPB) they'll only give you 16% of the items resale value that they intend on pricing it at before putting on their shelves. So for the sake of illustrating I'd taken in a Christmas present I received this year with the intent of selling the item was a limited collecters edition; Statue of Liberty from LEGO's signature architects product line. At the time the set was actively selling on eBay for upwards of $100 regularly lowest listing price I saw was $80, that said when going into HPB the gentleman behind the counter believe that they would most likely only get $25 for my item and offered me $4 I argued and informed him that they were regularly selling for upwards of $100 online but he remained adamant unfortunately I needed the money desperately and $4 is better than 0 so I took it later to find the next week when I went into the store to my great surprise my Lego set unopened with all the pieces instruction books and certificate of authenticity the complete set was priced in store for $90 needless to say I was livid but there wasn't much I could do about it and sure enough when I return the week after it was no longer on the shelves so somebody had purchased it for the $90 asking price so my verdict on Half Price Books is there liars and cheats and be very careful of what you taking to sell because they will try to take advantage of you...
Read moreI really used to love going here, but since the pandemic started things don't seem quite the same.
The biggest issue I have had was recently hunting down a particular book. HPB has it in stock but they are charging $20 for a $10 dollar book. I asked the cashier about the pricing, because I wanted to make sure it wasn't a special edition or something along those lines (which would make sense for the additional cost).
They responded "it is priced as marked, that was the price it was going for when it came in and we checked it against what it was selling for on ebay. We also don't update the pricing often".
Now, I'm not sure how accurate those statements are but they work there, not me. I ended up lucking out and found a brand new copy at target on sale for $6.
The other frustrating thing is, if you order online you are charged shipping per item regardless of the items coming from the same facility. I definitely understand charging shipping, but if the used book sells for $5 and shipping is $4, and full retail is $10 for a brand new copy, I have no incentive to purchase from HPB.
I just don't really understand their business strategy there. Apparently it's banking on someone not being an...
Read moreFor 4+ years i have been acquiring and selling rare and antique books to a store in roseville and after hearing about Half Priced Books i thoght it would be great to sell all my other excess books to them and it would be a "win-win" for both parties. Unfortunately, after dealing with them for approximately 2 months now ( 10-12 ×) it depends on who is looking through the items you bring in... example: one time i brought in about 8 boxes of books and ephemera ( including a 1977 Star Wars program only given out at the world premier which goes for between $50.00-$100.00 on Ebay ).. they offer $8.60 LOL and then once i brong in around 6 boxes in which 2 boxes are labeled 1st editions and signed editions and the guy jusy poured them all out on the counter togethe and mixed them up with the other books ( unbelievable , right? ) oh, and my offer...$ 23.oo. Dealing with the ladies who work at the buying counter is professional but the gentlemen are a disappointment to...
