The Galleria — Attraction in Houston

The Galleria boasts over 400 stores, ranging from high-end luxury brands like Chanel and Gucci to popular retailers like Apple and Zara. Whether you're on a quest for fashion, beauty products, or home goods, the variety is impressive and caters to a diverse audience.

Dining options at The Galleria are equally remarkable. From casual eateries to fine dining, there’s something for every palate. Notable restaurants include The Cheesecake Factory, which has an extensive menu, and Peli Peli, where guests can experience the flavors of South African cuisine. The food court also offers a range of quick bites for those in a rush.

Beyond shopping and dining, The Galleria offers additional amenities that enhance the visitor experience. On the downside, The Galleria can get quite crowded during weekends and holidays, which may detract from the shopping experience. Additionally, the upscale nature of many stores may not appeal to every budget, but window shopping is always an option!

This mall has a wide range of shops (including Apple, Microsoft, Tesla), an awesome food court, an ice skating rink, and an interesting 2 storey water fountain. Despite its huge size, the entire mall is air-conditioned so it is a nice place to visit on a hot summer afternoon. Outside the mall (one block to the east) there is an impressive waterfall in the Waterwall Park. This mall is probably the best and largest in Texas.

However, as a tourist, I have seen lots of malls in my hometown and around the world. Comparing with other malls, the Galleria has a few things that didn't meet my expectations...

1. Insufficient maps: There are very few physical maps in the Galleria. There are several digital maps at various locations in the mall, but most of the time the digital maps are occupied by other people and the digital maps can only display one floor at a time. It's hard to find the location of a specific store quickly. Most malls offer printed maps but I don't see any in the Galleria. I ended up finding my directions in the mall using Google Map.
2. Insufficient seats: Other than the food court and the restaurants, I hardly see any seats or benches elsewhere in the mall. This is rather ridiculous, given the large size of the mall.
3. Poor public transport: Most mega-malls in other cities serve as transportation hubs (e.g. Mall of America in Minneapolis, Westfield Stratford City in London, etc) but the Galleria is only served by 3 public bus routes. Most people come by car, so the car parks and the surrounding streets have heavy traffic all the time.
4. There are things that I have taken for granted in other malls but I don't see in the Galleria: A cinema/cineplex, a bookstore, a supermarket/grocery store, charging points for...

Predatory Behaviour** The mall itself is amazing and I had a great experience overall, but I'm giving one star due to a disturbing incident with one of the stores, Lola Soap. I couldn't find a way to leave a review for the store directly, so I’m sharing my experience here.

During my visit, one of the wonderful women working at Lola Soap invited me in, and I enjoyed trying their products. I ended up purchasing a few items. Then, she suggested I try their eye cream and called over a colleague, Alex (or a name close to that), who had curly dark hair and was Italian.

What started as a product demonstration quickly turned inappropriate. He began flirting with me, holding my hands, and even pinching my chin while explaining the product. To make matters worse, he invited me to join him at a hotel across the street. I declined, feeling very uncomfortable.

When I decided not to purchase the eye cream, he became visibly upset and said, "I knew from the beginning you wouldn't buy anything. I just wanted to give you a chance to open your mind." At this point, I told him his behavior was rude and asked to speak to the manager. To my surprise, he claimed to be the manager and said if I had any complaints, I should take it up with mall management.

So, here is my complaint to the mall manager: This individual should not be interacting with customers. His behavior was incredibly unprofessional and, frankly, predatory. I hope action is taken so others don’t have to...
