The Royal Sonesta in Houston was not ready for prime time. This was supposed to be my first visit to a Sonesta hotel in Texas. The lobby was beautiful with grand views from every window, but I would have done better going to a quality hotel and a brand that I trust. I hope that next year’s conference is not at this hotel. Let’s just say this was one of the worst experiences at a hotel I’ve had in a long time. I just came from the airport as I traveled all day to get to Houston for a conference. I reserved my room several months in advance so the level of disrespect of my time, room uncleanliness and poor service makes the experience even more heartbreaking for me. The room I received was across from the ice machine and appeared to be a staff hang out. The bed appeared as if someone had laid in it. The toilet had trash in it. The walls were covered in drip stains. The rug needed maintenance and dirty. And the couch had several unsightly stains. But I’m not a pretentious person and was very tired. I was just going to press through this bad experience and enjoy watching the Olympics uninterrupted, study in peace and have a great conference the next day. That feeling was short lived when I tried to turn on the television. It didn’t work properly…no picture. So I called the front desk and was told that maintenance was coming up. The maintenance worker came promptly, surmised the situation for a few minutes and left explaining that he would return. Mind you, I just got in and still needed to take a shower and get something to eat. He returned with another male, another tv and lots of equipment. They were having more difficulties and left again! Unreal!!! Why do I have to cower in the corner to wait for maintenance workers to finish in order for me to take a shower and eat because management didn’t have the common decency to check my room I reserved months ago?! I had enough of this dirty room and it’s issues. I finally had to advocate for my self, call the front desk again and drag my tired hungry self with all my belongings back to the lobby. The staff must be use to the complaints; no apology just a flat response. After getting to another room which wasn’t much better than the first, I wanted to order room service. I called and called but no one picked up the phone. I tried four times for dinner. I ended up ordering from Uber Eats, waiting in the lobby for PF Chang’s. (Very good by the way.). I tried another day and should have ordered from Uber Eats. The fruit plate was beautiful but the entree was just reheated and dry. I hope that next year’s conference is not with this hotel.

On July 28, 2023 I was visiting Houston for my family reunion. I checked into the hotel at 4:15 pm on that Friday. I always use and pay extra for the valet for added security and protection. On July 29th at around 6pm, my family gathered in the lobby to head to our reunion dinner. I gave the valet worker my ticket and waited. 45 minutes passed, as my family began to take various vehicles to the dinner location, still no car. I asked the valet manager what the delay was. The look on his face told me there was a problem. He said “Mr. Simpson, we can’t locate your car.” Puzzled, I asked what he meant. He said my car was gone but they still had the key fob. We walked to the garage area and sure enough my car was not there. They had no explanation. We walked back to the hotel lobby where I immediately called OnStar. After 20 minutes, OnStar was unable to pin point my vehicle via GPS tracking. Later I found out it had been disabled. A few days later, I learned that, on surveillance video, it took the thieves 35 minutes to steal my vehicle. My questions are many: - where was security and why don’t they patrol the garage. - why was my vehicle parked in an unsecured garage where non valet guests park - valet parking is a “perk” that costs more, why didn’t I get valet service. - Who bears responsibility because so far the hotel is pointing fingers at the valet company. - how did the thieves exit the garage without the spikes damaging the tires - did an employee help them For the readers and guests reading this, I “owned” a 2021 Cadillac Escalade with a sticker price of $130,000. I waited 9 months for delivery because of the chip shortage and COVID disrupting the supply chain. I had it 2 years and because of the hotel’s negligence, I am without a vehicle dealing with State Farm and GAP. I would not recommend this place at all. No one there offered to compensate me for their negligence and my pain and suffering. I even had to ask to get my stay comped. I’ve enclosed a picture of my car. Maybe then you can feel my anger.

(07/13/23) My husband and I took a quick staycation here to celebrate the anniversary of when we first met. Just a quick overnight stay. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful, as well as the bar area, and the hallways leading to the ballrooms. When checking in, the front desk associate, Fernanda was really kind, and helpful. However, that is the extent of my positive take on the hotel. We got to the room around 9pm after a nice evening and when we were preparing to go to bed, I noticed the headboard (made from that plastic/leather material) was peeling with the remnants ending up on our pillows, and in the bedding. I was ready to cut our losses and head home because there was no way housekeeping/management didn’t notice this prior to booking the room (obliviously, just my opinion and disappointment). It just made me lose confidence in the cleanliness of the room. My husband insisted we stay, just to enjoy a kid-free evening, and not to ruin what had been a really romantic evening. Reluctantly, I agreed. The next morning I woke up early to prepare to check-out, and noticed old makeup stains on the bedding. I do not wear makeup, so it wasn’t left there by me, and my concerns regarding cleanliness (or lack there of) were confirmed. We quickly packed up our things and checked out before 10am. The elevators seemed to be having issues, so we took the stairs instead. No big deal, we were only on the 3rd floor. The associate who checked us out was professional, but not as kind as Fernanda, which was also ok. Kindness is definitely not expected these days, and I appreciated the professionalism. Overall, I wouldn’t highly recommend this hotel, but I wouldn’t discourage anyone wanting to try it out. We didn’t stay long enough to experience the amenities like the pool or gym because we only booked an overnight stay. We had a refrigerator in our room, nice sized television, nice bathroom, and a pretty view.
