I attended as a visiting worshipper, but this Episcopal cathedral is well worth visiting as a tourist as well. Beautiful Nave (sanctuary) with gorgeous windows, woodwork, organ loft and more.
Most Sunday nights at 6 they have Breaking Bread gathering program. Once a month it's a Jazz Mass. I didn't have a chance to experience that.
If you want to come to worship on a Sunday, they have a Rite I ("Thee & Thou" language at 7:30am, with Rite II (modern language) services at 8:45 & 11:15am. Normally a Eucharist (Holy Communion aka "mass" at all services. In The Episcopal Church all are welcome to Christ's Table. (Officially all baptized Christians by any denomination, but in practice all are welcome.) Most of the priests are women, which is refreshing and great.
Worship services are towards the "high church" end of the spectrum of Episcopal / Anglican worship styles, but not full-on Anglo-Catholic. Though last Sunday, the First Sunday of Advent, they had full "smells & bells" with sung readings, prayers, and Eucharist.
They have a lot of social programs and if I lived in Nashville Christ Church Cathedral would be my...
Read moreI was visiting Nashville and was downtown for the first time. I found the church and entered near the beginning of their service. I felt comfortable since I'm familiar with the form of worship. There was a definite reserve but that's pretty typically Episcopalian.
Warnjng: this next thought will require thought, acceptance and CHANGE. Proceed at your own risk. I will leave a recommendation: during the Postlude, there was a lot of conversation. Some of it was quite loud. This is a typical but not omnipresent practice in Episcopal Churches. Please allow a period of quiet listening and reflection during the Postlude. Some will say "We've always done it this way. Others - it's our time to catch up with friends. The Musicians offering the musical ending to the service will say " They never listen or care that I spent hours perfecting my offering. God hears over the hubbub. "
Beautiful Sanctuary. And even though I'm a relatively lone wolf and don't need lots of attention. As a first time visitor, I left without a welcome. Lots of visitors in Nashville. No doubt about that. I would look around if I...
Read moreWow, this is one magnificent cathedral. Even though it’s not gigantic it’s still truly magnificent. It’s very rare to see this level of quality of craftsmanship mostly in wood on the inside of the curved ceilings and carvings on the alter and all around. The stained glass too was unique and brilliant. The organ pipes look world class and while we didn’t hear music while we were there we could just imagine how extraordinary the must be. Right up Broadway in a quieter area. Was open middle of afternoon Good Friday when we stopped by. Perfect place to reflect, rest, and just take in the beauty whether religious or not. Very much an “all are welcome” feel. It’s a special and...
