I came to this gallery with a group of friends and the behavior of one of the staff was extremely disappointing as they were micro-aggressive.
I had a busy morning that day and was unable to do my makeup, and all of my friends looked very put together so I decided to put some on. I made sure to be keep out of people's way and not get close to the art just to be cautious. (And for reference I don't wear or own any products that could go everywhere like setting spray or powders.)
Me and my friends got separated and I was with one group and we went to find our other friends. Lucky the part of the gallery they were in had a bench so I just sat and put on some mascara. As I was sitting down a woman came in and started accusing my friends of taking pictures after they were told they couldn't. They clarified to both the woman then and later me that they did not. She said something along the lines of "well she's putting on makeup". And I was confused because I didn't even take out my phone to use the camera, and it had been in my pocket the whole time I was in the gallery. (I used a compact to put on my makeup.) I said "I'm just putting on makeup, I didn't take any photos". And I couldn't see her expression because I had taken off my glasses to put the mascara on, but later when me and my friends were talking about it they said she gave me a really nasty look.
To make matters worst there were people taking photos. I don't think it's a coincidence that me and my friends (we are all POC) were talked to and accused of actions we did not do while two white women were able to take multiple pictures in the gallery as well as other white people...
Read moreextremely unprofessional and racist. this woman with square glasses verbally harassed me and my best friend (we're both women of color and my best friend is afro-guyanese) and told us that there were no photoshoots allowed when we were only taking photos of the art pieces. it's interesting since there were two other girls (of caucasian descent) in the atrium that were blatantly taking photos of themselves while the other employees ignored them. she was hostile and spoke to the both of us extremely condescendingly. i came excitedly to see the andy warhol exhibition as i am deeply passionate about contemporary art but left extremely dissatisfied and frustrated and if you are of asian or afro descent i would recommend staying far from...
Read moreReally beautiful James Turrell exhibit. Had a very welcoming experience even at 5.55 pm on a Friday eve when I chanced upon one of my mentors in light. In James Turrell's otherworldly installation the guide was very kind, letting me ponder the humming presence, and the invisible, unseen depths of light. A real pleasure to discover the space hiding within. It is the perfect reflection for a world in which people have no idea where they are, what they are looking at, or how to get beyond the screen. Thank you. Wish I had longer than 5 mins there on this trip, but it was a blissful gift of an experience that I reckon will stay with me for many...
