I can’t say enough good things about Justin at The Wayward Hairdresser! After more than a year without a proper cut, I’d worked up a hefty dose of “hair-xiety” while hunting for a new stylist. I kept coming across glowing blog posts about this salon—especially about Justin—so I decided to take the leap. Best decision ever. Totally worth the 1hr+ ride into Brooklyn!

From the moment I sat in his chair, Justin was calm, patient, and genuinely consultative. He asked really thoughtful questions and what kind of vibe I was hoping to project. Rather than rushing into scissors-mode, he talked and guided me through the process. That level of transparency instantly put me at ease.

The transformation itself was magic. Justin’s attention to detail is unreal—every snip felt intentional, and he checked in throughout to make sure I was comfortable. I actually gasped (in the best way) at the finished product! (that got a chuckle from Justin.) My hair feels lighter, healthier, and somehow more me than it has in years. Friends, coworkers, and even strangers have been showering me with compliments since.

Beyond the technical skill, the entire salon has an inviting, chill vibe that I really appreciated-no pretentiousness, just good music and friendly faces. Booking was easy, pricing was fair, and the aftercare tips Justin gave me have made styling at home super manageable.

Best blowout with a touch of styling (they pinned one side back so it wouldn't be in my face)!! I was so beyond pleased! Would highly recommend and even go back for a haircut - and thats coming form someone who has a fear of haircutters with scissors.

The vibe is great and cheerful!

The reason for the four stars is because of how long it took. I was scheduled with Lauren and she was doing and did a great job - really listened to what I wanted out of the blowout: volume with some natural waves. I have easy hair and normally a blowout takes a maximum of 25 minutes of blowing.

The blowouts are an hour long. 10 minutes before the end of my hour - Lauren realized her next customer had already arrived and started picking up the pace. She finished the blowout but I had asked in the beginning if they could pin it back. She asked the salon receptionist if she could grab some bobby pins. Once the receptionist brought the pins, she was also asked to put them in.

And then just like that, Lauren was gone. Without finishing the job because her next customer was there. I didn't quite understand the situation. It would have taken another 5 minutes to just finish with me. Instead the receptionist and another senior stylist had to get involved and it became a situation. I just followed Haley-May to this amazing salon. I have struggled to find someone in Brooklyn who could color my hair correctly. It is fine and very porous and as it has started to get gray, it seems impossible to ever get the color right. I have spent too much time correcting bad color jobs (and at the expense of my hair). Enter amazing, Haley-May. She truly understands the science of color and the needs of her client (plus how their hair will respond). The first time I went to her, she spent a great deal of time with me to tell me the options I had to correct the color as some might be more immediate but damaging to my hair. I choose to have it corrected over a few months (and of course, it always looked fabulous during those three months). And then WOW - EXACTLY what I wanted and so shiny and beautiful. If most of you are like me, you know how hard it is to find someone who does such a great job that you leave the shop feeling like a super model !! I haven't had many of those in my life. She gives a stunning cut and style as well. She is one talented lady. And I love love love this shop. Kelly (the owner) is so welcoming and lovely.
