Ever seen a water puppet show before?! 🎭 Nope me neither until this one! The Thang Long Water Puppet show has been around since 1969, but the art form of water puppetry dates back over 1000 years to the Red River Delta in Northern Vietnam as a way to celebrate the rice harvest. Now its a popular tourist attraction and definitely a unique experience showcasing Vietnamese music, sigining, folk tales, culture and history. There are multiple showings each day and the cheapest tickets can be bought right at the box office which is located opposite Hoan Kiem Lake and the red bridge in the famous Old Quarter. You’ll save money buying direct rather than from agency. (Just go early to secure your spot). The show lasts about an hour and costs $10 or 20,000VND. If you want, you can pack extra to have translating headphones which we didn’t end up using as we could still gather enough of the story by watching. Let me know if you’d want to go or if you’ve been, what did you think of it? :#: : #waterpuppetshow #hanoi #hanoioldquarter #vietnamtravel #hanoitrip #imaginASEAN

The water puppet show in Hanoi, Vietnam, is a mesmerizing cultural experience that brings to life a traditional art form dating back to the 11th century. Held at the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, this unique performance features intricately crafted wooden puppets that dance on water, skillfully manipulated by hidden puppeteers. The show is accompanied by live traditional Vietnamese music, including the use of bamboo flutes, drums, and cymbals, which adds to the vibrant and enchanting atmosphere. The storytelling is both humorous and poignant, depicting rural Vietnamese life, historical legends, and folklore. Even without understanding the Vietnamese language, the visual spectacle and the expressive movements of the puppets make the narratives engaging and easy to follow. One of the highlights is the play of light and water, which creates a magical ambiance, making the puppets appear to glide and float effortlessly. The coordination and skill of the puppeteers are truly impressive, showcasing a deep mastery of this age-old tradition. The theatre offers different seating prices: 100,000 Vietnamese dong for the last row, 150,000 Vietnamese dong for the middle row, and 200,000 Vietnamese dong for the front row. Despite the tiered pricing, you can sit just about anywhere and get a good view, so there's no need to worry too much about your seating choice. Additionally, you can pay 50,000 Vietnamese dong for an audio guide, which is highly recommended. While you can still enjoy the music, visuals, and live performance without it, the audio guide provides valuable context, explaining what each story is about. Though it doesn't translate verbatim what the puppets are saying, it offers a quick narrative either before, during, or after each performance, significantly enhancing your understanding. Overall, the water puppet show in Hanoi is a delightful and culturally rich experience, offering a glimpse into Vietnam's heritage and artistry. It is a must-see for anyone visiting the city, providing entertainment and insight into the country's rich cultural tapestry. - loved when the puppet performers came out at the end of the show.

Ladies and gentlemen, gather 'round, because I’m about to take you on a magical journey to the heart of Hanoi, where water meets wonder and puppets become more than just marionettes—they become the stuff of legend! Welcome to the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, the place where my childhood dreams of water-themed puppet shows come to life. Imagine, if you will, a stage that's not a stage at all but a shimmering pool of water. That’s right, folks—this ain’t your average theatre experience. The puppeteers, who are basically the Michael Jordans of puppet manipulation, stand behind a curtain, wielding their puppets with the precision and grace of a ballet dancer who’s had a few too many Red Bulls. These water puppets, let me tell you, are not your run-of-the-mill, flat-on-a-string type of deal. No, no, these are vibrant, three-dimensional characters splashing around in their aquatic stage like they’ve just stepped out of a storybook. You’ve got everything from heroic dragons to mischievous frogs, and they all dance, dive, and pirouette through the water like they’re auditioning for “Dancing with the Stars: Underwater Edition.” And let’s talk about the music. Oh, the music! It’s like someone took an entire orchestra, distilled it into a delightful blend of traditional Vietnamese tunes, and then sprinkled a little fairy dust on top. It’s uplifting, it’s energizing, and it’s the kind of music that makes you want to grab a puppet and join the show yourself. Now, if you’re thinking, “Will, this sounds like it’s just for kids,” let me assure you, my friend, it’s not. Sure, there’s plenty of whimsy to go around, but there’s also a deep, rich cultural tapestry woven into every splash and swoosh. You get a sense of Vietnamese folklore and tradition that’s as refreshing as the water those puppets are dancing in. t’s a splash-tacular extravaganza that’ll leave you clapping, laughing, and maybe even a little inspired to try your hand at water puppetry. Trust me, it’s worth every drop!

Very disappointing show in general and kinda feels like a tourist trap attraction, let me explain why: (ticket prices range from 100k, 150k and 200k VND depending on the row of the seat) I purchased the 200k seat (roughly 8$ usd) 1. I can bet 80~90% of the audience are foreigner and the show is completely in Vietnamese language both narration, puppets talking and the opera singing which I totally understand because is a cultural show but your costumers are foreigner mostly so at least the should do a back narration in english so everyone can understand or a second narration after the vietnamese one 2. they do offer a device for 50k VND to do the narration in your preferred language but is only for the narration before each scene (it was like 6~7scene) and it was hard to ear the device because the sound, music, opera, etc etc from the actual show didnt let me hear clearly. when the character in each scene was talking the device DOESNT TRANSLATE ANY OF THAT… so in the end it was a pretty useless device… 3. the light was completely off, they need better lightning because after the second scene of the dragons start shooting “fire” (which are more loke fireworks) from their mouth the scenery starts fogging and is hard to appreciate the show from that moment till the end. 4. the prices for the tickets are not expensive or cheap either but for the amount of shows they do each day I think they should do better job with the lightning or give a better show (the theater always sold out and the line for the tickets are long) 5. I usually love theater but didn't enjoy this one and not because of the language barrier but the show wasn't interactive enough with the public and I felt like the showmen dont put effort doing it 6. they are taking advantage because of the location they are at (near the lake in old quarter where all tourist pass by or stay) I hope I wouldnt waste 250k vnd in that show and 1 hour of my precious trip in there, believe me just save that money for a good coffee or a massage, you will enjoy it more 100%
