Upon arrival, we were welcomed with open arms by a host whose hospitality was as grand as the building itself. However, my sense of foreboding kicked in as soon as I caught sight of a peculiar "glancing" sign en route to our room. The building, while majestic in appearance, fell remarkably short in providing the bare essentials—no air conditioning, no ventilation, no screens, no draft, not even a humble fan to stir the stagnant air. As we tried to settle in, an unexpected and uninvited entourage of local insects made their presence known, taking advantage of the glaring omission of screens—a realization that dawned on me all too late.
The quest for a more accommodating abode, equipped with the much-needed screens and at a more reasonable price, consumed the better part of an hour. Eventually, our efforts paid off, securing a sanctuary that promised peace from our six-legged acquaintances and met with my family’s approval.
The thought then struck me: if leaving doors open was the only way to invite a whisper of breeze into this fortress, what other, more adventurous wildlife might take up the offer? The imagination runs wild with visions of local fauna turning into unexpected spectators. Imagine, if you will, a monkey perched silently, eyes wide with curiosity, as it witnesses the human spectacle of intimacy. The very idea borders on the absurd, transforming an ordinary vacation anecdote into a comic tale of tropical misadventures and...

From our porch, we could sit outside and watch the sunrise over the entire valley, and one morning we even saw a rainbow stretch across it—absolutely breathtaking.
The charm of this place goes beyond the scenery. Adorable little capybara-like creatures wandered through the bushes near the property, adding to the magic. The hotel is family-owned and has been passed down for generations, which we didn’t realize until we arrived. That sense of tradition and care shines through in everything they do.
We arrived around midnight, and someone was waiting to greet us right away. Then, incredibly, that same person was up at 6 a.m. to serve breakfast—always included, always delicious, and always different each day. From fresh local fruits to juices and homemade dishes, every breakfast was a treat.
What really made the experience unforgettable, though, was the warmth of the family who runs it. They were so welcoming and kind that by the end of our stay, it felt less like we were leaving a hotel and more like we were saying goodbye to friends. On our last day, I even gave them a hug before we left.
This hotel is so much more than a place to stay—it feels...
Read moreMy wife and I stayed 2 nights at Hotel Flor de Bromelia in Santa Helena at the end of April 2025. We found it to be a very special small boutique lodge. We selected it because we wanted a room with a view while we visited Monteverde and Selvatura and we were not disappointed. Even though we were in the region of the high altitude cloud forests of Costa Rica when the overcast cleared we could see all the way to the Pacific coast. Very cool. Of the rooms available we chose the top floor 1-room option with the beautiful scenery out the window. With only a partition between the sleeping area and the bathroom space it might not work for everyone, but for my wife and I we were fine. Nights were cool so with the open windows we were very comfortable. The best part of our stay was getting to meet the wonderful family who own and operate the hotel. They were so attentive to our needs and made great recommendations for evening meal restaurants and area travels. On top of that, they prepared our delicious, individually home-cooked breakfasts each morning. We loved our stay at Hotel Flor de Bromelia and highly recommend it to other travelers...
