The three most significant points in this review from me: the location is easy for accessing transit options (water taxi, water bus, train station, bus terminal) big concerns for safety and accessibility in the bathroom ask for additional mosquito repellent if you see mosquitoes in your room
LOCATION The location is very convenient since it is 4 minutes away from the S.Lucia train station and about 10 minutes away from Piazza Roma where you can get a direct bus to the airport for €10. This is a huge plus point since there are no land vehicles allowed on the island and you have to carry your luggage yourself. (Pls note that you do need to cross a bridge to get to the bus station)
ROOMS The lobby is impressive in an antique kind of way. The carpets are also nice, but they're worn out and there's a slight mouldy smell (along with the air fresheners) in the hallways. This is perhaps to be expected in Venice.
The rooms are also from a similar era and are quite small (I guess it depends on which room you've paid for). That being said, it's workable if you don't spread out your stuff too much. There is a closet with some shelves and one chair in the corner. My biggest concern however, is with the bathroom. It is very large and looks more updated. There is a deep bathtub which some people might like, but it is also a bigger safety concern to get in and out of it. There is no shower curtain or glass enclosure around the tub, so you inevitably get water all over the glossy bathroom floor tiles. We laid down most of our additional hand towels on the floor to prevent slipping while getting out of the tub. There is a large window that opens to outside, and the bathroom dried up fairly quickly in August, but it's still a huge slipping hazard.
We encountered some huge mosquitoes in the room when we arrived and got two really big bites within minutes. I called down to reception to ask about repellent since I saw a plug-in repellant in the bathroom. They sent someone with another one which I plugged into the room and resolved the issue. I ended up with a few dead mosquitoes around the room shortly after plugging it in. If there had been plug-in repellant in both rooms to begin with, this issue could have been avoided.
The bed and pillows were comfortable. Housekeeping did a wonderful job each day.
There are no irons allowed in Venice hotels due to some regulation. We hung our clothes in the bathroom while showering to steam out some wrinkles.
SERVICE As mentioned in previous reviews, the front desk staff aren't particularly pleasant or welcoming. The staff who help with luggage, with housekeeping, with the breakfast are all WONDERFUL (this is regardless of whether you give them any cash tips or not). The breakfast buffet is sizeable and delicious, though I wish they had some additional vegetarian protein options as well. There's lots of seating both indoors and outdoors overlooking the canal, but just know that the pigeons and seagulls will be making threatening eye contact with you the whole time. Haha.
Overall, I would not recommend this location for people with mobility issues, young children, or people with serious dust/mould allergies. It's quite expensive, but not particularly luxurious. You're mostly paying for the...
Read moreOur stay at this hotel has been a mixed experience. First of all, I rarely write negative reviews (you can see all my reviews), so if I write a negative review, it truly deserves to receive one.
First, I will let you know what positive things there are: • Our 2nd room (No. 222) was really good, comfortable, luxurious, and had a really nice view of the Grand Canal. • Some of the staff are really nice, friendly, and helpful. • The location is really great, just a 3-minute walk from the central station.
And here are the negative things: • Not all deluxe vista canal view rooms have a balcony and big windows. Initially, we booked a deluxe vista canal view room because on the website, it looked really beautiful, with a balcony and big windows. Our first room (No. 228, the last picture) did not have a balcony and had small windows. I could not enjoy the view of the Grand Canal because of the small windows. On the first day, we politely asked to change our room to a staff member at the reception (an old thin man) because the room was really different from the pictures on their website. However, he didn’t want to help us and just replied, "On our website, it doesn't state that all the rooms have a balcony." I replied, "Yeah, but your website doesn't have a footnote or something that explains that some rooms could be different from the pictures on the website. If I had seen that on the website, then maybe I would not have booked the room or I would have just booked another room category which has a balcony or big windows like a junior suite." The man didn’t reply back to me. Instead, he told us to come back again tomorrow to speak to another colleague. So the following day, we asked again to change our room. This time, it was another man, a little bit younger and really nice, and it was not complicated. He gave us another room, like the one on the website, and we were really happy about it. So, if you want to book a deluxe vista canal room, just make sure to mention that you don’t want to stay in room 228. • The wifi was really slow • Some staff were really impolite, arrogant, and unhelpful. • As I wrote above, the room is excellent, but some things (like the door handle, toilet) are broken and need to be repaired. • The breakfast is the worst. The breakfast room is really small, it was overcrowded, and the food is tasteless. Really! We have stayed in different hotels in Italy (some of them are 3-star hotels), but the food is just better. For a 4-star hotel, the food is unacceptable.
Summary: Well, because of everything that happened during our stay, maybe next time, I would prefer to stay in another 4-star hotel. Or if you want to stay in this hotel and want to have a really nice room with a balcony and big windows, just book a junior suite or another room category instead of a deluxe vista canal view room (because of all the things I...
Read moreA Disastrous Experience at Hotel Principe, Venice
I recently had the misfortune of staying at Hotel Principe during my trip to Venice, and I must say it was an absolute nightmare from start to finish. I cannot stress enough how disappointed I am with this establishment. Let me share my experience, so you can avoid making the same mistake.
First and foremost, the hotel's staff were incredibly rude and unprofessional. From the moment I arrived, I was met with indifference and a complete lack of hospitality. They seemed disinterested in providing any sort of assistance or making my stay comfortable. It's as if they were doing me a favor by allowing me to stay at their hotel.
Moving on to the rooms, they were far from what was advertised. The photographs on the hotel's website must have been taken ages ago because the reality was completely different. The room was cramped, outdated, and had a musty smell that lingered throughout my entire stay. The bed was uncomfortable, and the linens looked worn-out and shabby.
To make matters worse, the cleanliness of the room was questionable at best. I found stains on the wall, hair in the bathroom, and dust on the furniture. It was evident that the housekeeping staff did a poor job, further confirming the hotel's lack of attention to detail and cleanliness.
Now, let's talk about the noise. The hotel is located in a bustling area, which is expected in Venice. However, the windows were so thin that every sound from the outside street was amplified inside the room. It felt like I was trying to sleep in the middle of a construction site. I barely got any rest during my stay, which made exploring the beautiful city during the day incredibly challenging.
Lastly, the value for money was utterly disappointing. The prices charged by Hotel Principe were exorbitant, especially considering the dismal quality of the accommodations and services provided. I would have gladly paid a premium for a comfortable and enjoyable stay, but unfortunately, that was far from the reality I experienced.
In conclusion, I strongly advise against staying at Hotel Principe in Venice. The unhelpful staff, subpar rooms, lack of cleanliness, constant noise, and poor value for money make this hotel an absolute disaster. Save yourself the frustration and choose a different accommodation option that prioritizes customer...
