This was our first time back since the renovation and the property changed from a Doubletree to a Curio. The stay wasn’t perfect but there were more moments the hotel shined than not thanks to the staff.
Valet was friendly, professional. It was really busy and they kept everything moving. Great job on the renovation. Tasteful, modern but warm. Also, desk is immediately on the left when you enter the lobby. I don’t enjoy meandering through a large lobby in search of the check-in desk. Front desk staff was professional but more on them later. As for the spacious room, they delivered on a key detail for me as a guest - the bed & bedding was comfortable! A trip is RUINED for me if I can’t get a good night’s rest. Period. Streaming options weren’t as extensive (missing Amazon/Prime, Peacock, Paramount, not sure about Hulu) but had Netflix at least. Balcony was large.
This is where things fall apart just a bit. After a 4 hour drive in snowy conditions, I was ready for food and my child was definitely ready only to be told that the restaurant Edwin’s and the bar were too busy so they weren’t accepting takeaway orders. Finding no delivery options and desperate, front desk staff member Lucio stepped in and managed to get two delicious pizzas made and personally delivered them. He went the extra mile and really saved my night. I so appreciated it. The following evening, incredibly, I was told the same thing - they were not taking orders! The first night was Valentine’s Day so while frustrating, it was kind of understandable but two nights in a row was definitely not. I went straight to the front desk. I wish knew the name of the person because he had checked us in and was at the desk as well the night before when it happened the first time so he immediately said, “Let me get the restaurant manager.” I spoke with Emily. She knew exactly where I was coming from, no excuses, and did what she could to make it right the best she could. The bartender I spoke with both nights was indifferent; he wasn’t as good of a rep.
What food we did manage to try was really good but it was only the gourmet pizzas (really good) and chicken tenders/fries so my review on the entrees will have to wait for our next trip. Breakfast was delicious. Service may need to be ironed out a bit more. Coffee was a bit strong - had a slight burnt note like Starbucks of which I am not a fan.
As you can see, it was a slightly mixed experience of a stay but how any business handles crisis speaks volumes about their core values. It was a good enough experience that we’ll definitely be back. We stayed several times when it was still a Doubletree but had banned the property and opted for the Park Hyatt, Westin, and Grand Hyatt at Beaver & Vail. The Alpenrock will get another chance but please, you have to feed your guests, especially the ones who stay on property. The restaurant was really good before the renovation so I am looking forward to...
Read moreThe location and the pretty lobby are the only things going for this place. Everything else ranged from underwhelming to outright frustrating.||Hidden Fees & Basic Amenities* They charge a “daily amenity fee,” but for what exactly? A couple of small hot tubs and a motel-sized gym with no machines, no squat rack, and a handful of free weights? No pool, no spa, no game room, nothing. This would be underwhelming at $150 a night—let alone $800.||Disorganized Staff The staff is mostly well-meaning but clearly untrained. The valet and front desk were a disaster. We had a split reservation (cash and points), asked them to merge it—they didn’t. Keys kept deactivating. Checkout took nearly an hour, with guests yelling in frustration.||Housekeeping * This was probably the worst part. Every day was a battle to get the room cleaned. Even when they showed up, it was half-done—coffee stations left empty, cleaning supplies left behind, trash still in the bin. One staff member actually told us that cleaning was “optional.” Seriously?||Rooms & Facilities TV didn’t work (kept shutting off every 5 minutes), heater only had two settings—sauna or icebox. Bathroom had no heating vent and low water pressure. For a hotel charging luxury prices, this was amateur hour.||Food & Beverage **** Breakfast is $55 for a tiny buffet—your Gold/Diamond credit barely covers a single item. Dinner was a disaster: took over an hour, wrong food brought to everyone at the table, and zero coordination.||Bellhop & Valet ** They mixed up our luggage with another guest’s even after I explicitly warned them. My bags ended up lost for hours. Missed a half-day of skiing waiting for them to find it.||Other Issues ** The “shuttle” is a joke, always late or MIA. You’re better off walking. The Curio canteen? Prices aren’t listed for a reason, prepare for sticker shock. ($15 for a soda)||Water bottle racket - Ohh how could I forget this one. The tap water isn't very good for drinking, they give you bottles of water in the gym or ski valet, but it runs out fast. If you want bottles of water to the room they charge you $10 a bottle, so people, so people go to the gym and ski valet, and hoard. I mean talk about nickel and diming!||Bottom Line* This hotel has Four Seasons pricing with worse-than-roadside-motel service and amenities. . They clearly did a cosmetic makeover: refurbished the lobby, changed the name—but none of the real issues were fixed. It’s all smoke and mirrors.||Avoid this hotel unless you're paying with points and prepared for a DIY experience at...
Read moreOh our wonderful spring break got turned upside down many times during this trip. The Hotel has everything to be a cozy, small Alpine Luxury. The staff for the most part couldn't careless. They are too busy chatting amongst themselves. We watched, untrained staff take 45 minutes after they made an error and canceled our reservation even after they notated the account that our flight was delayed 12 hours out of Dallas. Let me say that one more time ... they had a note not to cancel because I called and let them know. We don't get into our room till about 4 am. To our surprise, they offer a shuttle.. only problem is the shuttle only runs to your destination (even when they say you just have to call the lobby and they will come pick you up). They find an excuse and basically leave you stranded. Happened twice for us. That same night as we had to walk back, I ended up slipping and falling on the sidewalk on the way back to the hotel. Worry not this is just getting better... we attempt to bring our soaked boots inside to dry them in the hotel and we are told ski boots are not allowed up, meanwhile we see people walking on them on the first floor. When we asked why the Valet manager unkindly states it is the rules and that it causes damages, scratches on the floors (mind that we were holding them and not walking on them). He proceeds to take the boots from us since our own property is not allowed and takes them. Asks my husband for his name and my name and to our joy the next day, since we dont have same last names... they are lost (well, his not mine). 1 Hour later they managed to find it. Fast forward to the next day and they lost a set of poles.. At this point we better laugh because they do not have their stuff together. At check out the bill was 800 more than what we had originally pre paid (should have been 3200 for 3 nights). Imagine you having to spend 30 minutes at check out because of the incompetence. Going over line by line (the manager, surprised says well maybe they are incidentals ..) at that point i was not happy, the only incidentals we had are most likely my medical bills after this crazy weekend. He finally adjusted and we were finally free. A gorgeous Hotel being run...
