Update: Feb 2025: I can't believe it, its almost an "off-season rate" for once in a LONG time. This is our go to Hotel when we have some business to attend to. We like the general location and ample parking. The prices are higher than I would like to pay but this is typical for most hotels. It is currently off season and room are still a bit high on a Friday or Saturday night. The room I was assigned was on the first floor and I could tell the fire department or some other person pried the door open at some time in the past. The door still latched without issue. The bathtub/shower combo has seen better days. When I checked in, they said they have a "$250 damage deposit" required to be taken out. The beef with this is, they personally DON'T walk through the room with you so how in the world do THEY know whats been damaged prior in the room and what do I do if I see something that is questionable? Its truly a wonky way of looking at a "damage deposit". The rooms aren't sound proof, so you can expect to hear conversations through those walls. They also will charge a $15.00 fee per night for parking, but this fee is waived if you have any military service. Parking fees can be waived if the hotel considers it "off season" and there are no random people parking at the hotel to party or spend a day at the beach - or both. There is a Kroger close, simply walk out the front door and look to the right. That brick building across the street to the right is a Kroger for munchies, drinks and even dinner.
Prior Visit(s) Since the hurricane and this hotel renovation, the prices are significantly higher. Close to $150-180 a night? NO THANKS. Too high, since there are AMPLE other hotels around the oceanfront. Once a favorite hotel is being tossed aside because of the near double the original price a night. Who's paying for the hotel upgrade? I am lowering the rating. Its the same infrastructure with the same crappy elevator with new cosmetics, a new way for breakfast and some same ol' same ol' thrown in. This is not a Hilton quality like stay.... Oh add in the fact that unless you are military, you will have to add in a $15.00 per night parking charge. That becomes a game changer - Prices in October.... off season when locals want to stay at this hotel and prices are still inflated for the tourism which ended when school starts in September??
ORIGINAL Review when prices were near $80 a night I stay in this hotel for the Tidewater Coin Club Show Held in February and October. I like the ample parking spaces, and the fact that there is a grocery store across the street behind the hotel. Rooms are pretty decent for the money. Its situated in a good area, I have had no problems. There are a decent amount of places to eat within walking distance. I think this hotel is still pet friendly, although I do not take pets to this hotel. I am looking forward to seeing if they updated the below average breakfast to a warm cheery breakfast that most of the other hotels offer. With the convenience, location, clean rooms and quiet area This hotel deserves...
Read moreI struggled with what to rate this hotel. We are not fancy hotel people. We appreciate affordable accommodations and don't need all the frills. After reading reviews for all the affordable hotels near the beach, I decided to book La Quinta through the hotels.com app.
Pros: very close to the beach, easy check in, friendly staff, ample parking (charge of $15/day), nice clean room, cold air conditioning, comfortable bed and plenty of pillows, good water pressure (having thick hair, I appreciate this more than the average person lol), the fridge in our room was super cold, the pool was on the smaller side but in the sun most of the day.
Cons: Only one (of two) elevator worked during our four day stay so wait times were ridiculous. We ended up taking the stairs most of the time
Breakfast: nice that it's included but it was pretty sub-par. The same fake sausage patties and microwave scrambled "eggs"all four days we were there. It appeared they had one person taking care of breakfast which was not enough. He was having a hard time keeping everything well stocked and clean due to the sheer amount of people. Coffee was also hard to come by (again, people drinking it faster than they could brew it). A little variety in the daily offerings would have been nice. Also, not enough seating for everyone so it was quite chaotic.
Pets: I dont understand why people insist on vacationing with their pets. But...for those of us that don't travel with pets....this was a huge issue. So many irresponsible pet owners taking their pets into the breakfast area, leaving them inside the rooms allll day (barking the entire time), letting them jump on people in elevators and hallways. If your dog doesn't behave, leave them at home. You deserve the break from having to take care of your animals and other guests will appreciate the consideration.
Housekeeping: we had such a hard time communicating with housekeeping staff, with simple requests. "Do you have pool towels", "do you have do not disturb signs". The language barrier was quite frustrating.
Ice machines: there are 7 floors and only 2 (maybe 3) floors had working ice machines. This was a MAJOR inconvenience.
Moisture in our room: while the air conditioner worked really well at keeping our room a comfortable temp, we noticed that our clothes and the bedding felt slightly damp. At first I thought I was crazy, but I decided to put a dry towel near the air conditioner to test my theory and it indeed was wet w moisture by the time we got back to our room after being away for a few hours. Not quite sure what would cause this but it was strange. Problem solved by keeping clothes in luggage or the closet.
All in all....it was a decent stay but if we come back to the area, we will probably consider another hotel in the area before booking...
Read moreThe location of this hotel was fantastic. Directly behind it is a great supermarket and less than two blocks away is the beach. The staff was adequately friendly. But here are a handful of things that were not so great: The hot tub in the pool is the size of a postage stamp! It's 5' x 5' square - the tiles are old and cracked the seats are rough cement (snagged the suit bottom). There was also a fair amount of sand in the bottom of the tub. The pool could have used a good cleaning and the deck & ceiling were soaked mostly due to humidity. The hallways and lobby were clean. The stairwells are metal and cement, hollow sounding - a bit of a glorified fire escape. The far stairwell had vomit in it on Saturday morning when we used it, but by later in the day, fortunately, it had been cleaned up. . We were there for two nights. The room we had on the first night was on the 2nd floor very close to the elevator and next to the stair well. There was a motor or something that kept turning on intermittently and making our room rumble in addition to an odd smell in the room. The doors are not very insulated or something and helped carry sound. We had noisy people in our hallway that kept me awake most of the night. The heat/ac unit in the room worked great, but unfortunately doesn't have a fan-on constantly setting and there was no fan in the bathroom, so I didn't have a way to drown out the noise in the hallway. We switched rooms for the following night, moved to the 4th floor, no odd smell in this one and the noise level was better, but this time there was a dog in a neighboring room that would bark occasionally and the sound carried into our room easily. I've stayed in other hotels where the doors helped block sound... something was different in this hotel where the sound carried extremely well. The rooms were nice, however, clean, roomy, nice fridge & microwave, soft beds. The breakfast was very decent. The usual. The overall base price of the hotel was good (all the additional taxes was a bit over the top... Flat Rate Tax: $1 each night, City Tax: $5.25 each night & State Tax: $3.28 each night - An extra $19 in taxes! Wow!!)
All in all, I suppose I would stay here again because of the location and value, but would hope for quiet neighbors and would remember to bring earplugs! The best part of our stay in VA Beach was a small, local coffee joint only 3 blocks south. Great service, super...
