Calbee+ — Local services in Tokyo

On January 16, 2024, prior to my late dinner, I visited the Calbee Plus store located within Tokyo Station's First Avenue shopping area, specifically inside Tokyo Okashi Land near the Yaesu Central Entrance.

Arriving around 7 PM, I was disappointed to find that their freshly made, cut, and fried potato chips were already sold out—perhaps due to my late arrival.

The store was brightly lit and offered an extensive array of Calbee products, many of which are exclusive to Japan or limited editions not available elsewhere.

The selection included unique flavors such as Kamaage chips seasoned with katsuo-dashi and salt, Tokyo curry-flavored Jagabee, taco rice flavor, chocolate-coated chips, sweet butter flavor, anchovy chips, and many more varieties I'd never encountered before.

As a Calbee enthusiast, the temptation to purchase all 20-30 unique flavors was strong.

I wished the store provided samples, given the vast selection, to assist customers in making choices.

On the plus side, the prices were notably lower than those in my home country, where similar products in stores like Daiso and Don Don Donki are at least two to three times more expensive.

For tourists, the store offers tax refunds, so it's advisable to have your passport and payment method ready.

I love Calbee products but this store was so crowded I could barely navigate. Thankfully there was a short line to order fresh potatoes but there is only one kiosk, so that will explain the long line and crowd if someone gets stuck at payment or is unable to translate the kiosk. The item I wanted was sold out but I still enjoyed the fresh potatoes sticks. They were fluffy, light, but still crisp. 가루비는 스틱형 감자칩으로 잘 알려진 일본의 제과회사입니다. 일본에서는 칼슘의 '칼(カル)'과 비타민 B1의 '비(ビー)'를 따서 '칼비(カルビー)'라고 지었다고 해요. 한국에서는 일본어 표기법이 유성 파열음을 평음으로 표기하는 것을 원칙으로 하기 때문에 '가루비'라 발음한다고 하니 참고하세요~

국내에는 별도의 가루비 매장이 있지 않지만, 일본은 가루비 전용 매장이 주요 도심에 분포해있습니다. 후쿠오카, 오사카, 도쿄에서도 당연히 만나볼 수 있는데 저는 그 중에 도쿄역 그란스타 지하1층에 있는 매장을 방문했어요. 오픈시간이 9시인데, 8시50분에 도착했음에도 이미 줄을 서계신분들이 있더라고요. 셔터가 다 올라감과 동시에 매장으로 들어가 갓 튀긴 가루비를 먹을 수 있는 푸드코트로 향했습니다.

일본 가루비 매장에는 기존에 과자로 판매하는 상품이 아닌 주문과 동시에 갓 튀겨낸 감자튀김을 먹을 수 있어요!! 도쿄역 가루비플러스는 줄을 선 후 키오스크를 통해 주문할 수 있습니다. 일본어, 영어, 중국어, 한국어로 언어변환도 되어서 쉽게 주문이 가능해요~

도쿄역 가루비플러스 메뉴입니다. 감자칩, 포테리코, 감자츄러스를 비롯하여 홋카이도 소프트크림과 세트로 먹을 수도 있어요. 원하는 소스에 따라 맛을 다양하게 고를 수 있는데, 가랑어육수&소금맛, 피자맛, 샐러드맛으로 나누어져 있습니다. 저는 이전에 먹었던 포테리코 샐러드보다 더 큰 BIG 포테리코 샐러드 맛을 주문했어요!

현금으로 결제까지 완료하면 종이티켓이 나오고 번호가 표시되어 있어요. 위의 화면에 번호가 표시될 때까지 잠시 대기하면 되는데, 유리를 통해 포테리코가 직접 튀겨지는 모습도 볼 수 있습니다. 번호가 뜨면 종이티켓을 제출 후 수령해와서 작게나마 있는 테이블에서 먹으면 됩니다.

기존에 먹었던 포테리코보다 3배는 길고 두꺼운 사이즈로 압도적인 비주얼을 자랑하고 있습니다. 무엇보다 바로 튀겨나왔기 때문에 엄청 뜨거워서 손으로 잡기가 힘들정도에요~ 샐러드맛 가루소스가 듬뿍 뿌려져 있어 한 입 딱 먹는 순간 "호호~" 입김을 불며 먹게 되요.

주 재료는 미국산 생감자냉동감자이며, 프렌치 프라이를 건조시켜 바삭하게 만든 게 가루비의 특징이라고 합니다. 감자를 아주 잘게 반죽하여 부드러운 식감과 겉면의 얇은 튀김의 바삭함의 조화가 최고에요!! 진하디진한 감자에 짭쪼름한 맛의 샐러드소스가 계속 손이 가게 만드는 맛입니다.

맛있는 포테리코로 간식을 깔끔하게 먹은 후, 본격적으로 매장을 둘러봤어요. 명란맛, 타코야끼맛 등으로 가루비 제품의 맛이 이렇게나 다양할 줄 몰랐고, 맛 별로 하나씩 다 구매했어요~ 인형, 연필, 키링, 에코백 등 가루비 캐릭터를 활용한 상품들도 많아서 줄을 서있는 동안 살까말까 엄청 고민했습니다.
