Update: I originally posted this review months ago, but new evidence has come to light that confirms what Iāve been saying all alongāthis building is unsafe, and management has actively ignored resident health concerns.
Since moving into Uptown 550 in February 2025, my health completely deterioratedābreathing problems, vision decline, neurological issues, and eventually loss of consciousness. Iāve now been diagnosed with restrictive lung disease and confirmed mold exposure.
The most alarming part? I paid for independent environmental testing, which found extensive mold contamination inside the HVAC system, including dangerous mold growth all over the coils I begged management to clean for months. They ignored my requests while my health declined.
The photos Iāve uploaded here show the actual mold covering the inside of the HVAC unit in my apartmentāthe same unit that was blowing air throughout my home.
Instead of accountability, management gaslit me, denied responsibility, and pressured me to move out without providing any safe solution to handle contaminated belongings. Meanwhile, Iāve spent thousands on medical bills, lost work, and been displaced.
Since speaking out, Iāve heard from other residents dealing with similar health issues and environmental hazards here and at other Northwood Ravin properties. Most people are afraid to speak publicly. I was tooābut after what Iāve endured, I refuse to stay quiet.
Behind the luxury marketing is a company that puts profit over people. I would never recommend this building or any Northwood Ravin community to anyone who values their health and safety.
I moved into Uptown 550 (managed by Northwood Ravin) expecting luxury and safety. Instead, Iāve faced serious health issues from environmental hazards: chemical smells, gas-like odors, and smoke infiltration from other units. I passed out twice in my apartment and was taken by ambulance, and medical testing has confirmed mold exposure and other exposure affecting autoimmune system. Despite this, management failed to take the situation seriously, gave inconsistent responses, and offered no meaningful support. Iāve had to live elsewhere while still paying full rent, with no access to my belongings or resolution. The propertyās emergency protocols are deeply flawed. Be extremely cautious before signing a lease here.
UPDATE: Let me be very clear: Iāve exchanged over 150 emails with Uptown 550 and Northwood Ravin. Telling me to āreach outā now is insulting. Iāve done everything the āright way.ā What Iāve received in return is gaslighting, silence, and pressure to move out as if I were simply inconvenienced ā not poisoned.
Since February, Iāve reported: ⢠Chemical and gas-like odors ⢠Smoke and fumes from other units ⢠HVAC-related illness ⢠Visible water damage
Iāve been hospitalized multiple times and diagnosed with restrictive lung disease. Iāve seen nine specialists, undergone repeated testing, and now have lab-confirmed mold exposure in my blood ā which matches the air quality testing done inside my unit.
Iāve experienced vision problems, nervous system symptoms, and have lost consciousness inside my apartment on more than one occasion.
Despite that: ⢠Iāve paid over $5,000/month in rent ⢠Iāve not slept in my apartment since April 26 ⢠Iāve never demanded rent credit or reimbursement (though I should) ⢠Iāve complied with every management request for inspections, fumigation, and access ā even while sick and disoriented
And still, no real remediation. No accountability. Just a lease break offer, as if that erases the damage.
To anyone considering living here: Donāt be fooled by the āluxuryā branding. Ask about their air systems, how they respond to emergencies, and whether they notify residents about known hazards.
To current residents: If youāre feeling unwell, if your clothes or furniture smell like smoke, if your eyes burn, your chest hurts, or you feel off ā donāt ignore it. Speak up. You...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI have lived here for about a year and decided not to renew my lease. I typically wait a year before leaving a review, as many apartment complexes (including Uptown 550) often ask for feedback / write a google review within the first few weeks of moving ināduring the "honeymoon phase."
Hereās my honest take:
Pros: Dog-Friendly Environment: The property is very dog-friendly, with a large dog run outside the building. However, recently, Iāve noticed non-residents using it, and many dog owners arenāt picking up after their pets, which is frustrating.
Amenities: If you enjoy amenities, there are some good options, including a hot tub/spa area. Other amenities are fairly standard. Thereās a residents-only bar upstairs, but drink prices are higher than most bars in town, and the vibe is underwhelming. The midrise residents, however, rarely benefit from amenities like the concierge or barista, which still come with the same fees.
Maintenance: The maintenance team is fantasticāquick, responsive, and friendly. They deserve a 5/5 rating.
Location: Conveniently located near Whole Foods and the South End nightlife. However, be mindful of the increasing uptown homeless population around the building, as it can be uncomfortable at times.
Cons:
Fire Alarms: The fire alarms go off far too often. For someone working from home, this is extremely disruptive. Iāve had to pause meetings due to frequent false alarms, and attempts to reach the concierge for clarification are usually met with no response.
Valet Trash Service: The valet trash system is overly strict and inconsistent. Notes are often left for minor issues like loose strings or slightly wet bags, and trash isnāt collected. On top of that, thereās a $50 fee if you accidentally leave your trash can outside. Iāve stopped using this service and now take my trash to the chute myself. Many other residents share this frustration.
Midrise Building Condition: The midrise hallways could use a lot of work. There are visible wall damages, carpet stains, and frequent odors (e.g., dog urine on Level 2). Many residents donāt clean up after their pets, leaving unpleasant surprises in elevators and common areas.
Trash Placement: The trash area near the midrise entrance is poorly designed and smells terrible, especially in summer. Itās embarrassing when guests enter through this area, and I avoid it whenever possible.
Noise Levels: Noise is a consistent issue. With many residents owning dogs, barking can easily be heard throughout the day. Hallway insulation is poor, so noise travels, whether itās dogs or neighbors playing loud music. For those working from home, this can be quite disruptive.
Overall Impression: While Uptown 550 isnāt a bad place to live, itās overpriced for what it offers. The rent is comparable to or higher than newer, more updated buildings in the area (e.g., Hanover Dilworth, newer South End constructions). I was considering upgrading to a larger unit, but the constant fire alarms were the final straw for me. If you work from home or are sensitive to noise, Iād recommend...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis is not a luxury property. Other reviews stating health concerns and a blind corporate team are spot on. Gas lighting from both property teams and corporate staff have been witnessed firsthand and blatant legal violations per North Carolina landlord tenant law and GS42-42. As mentioned by another review until you make something public you can't get help.
In the latest cost saving mechanic at the property they have to decided to stop replacing filters in appliances. Per GS42-42.4 "Maintain in good and safe working order and promptly repair all electrical, plumbing, sanitary, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and other facilities and appliances supplied or required to be supplied by the landlord provided that notification of needed repairs is made to the landlord in writing by the tenant, except in emergency situations."
While they didn't have to provide me with a refrigerator, they did and now by the law, they have to maintain it but refuse. You would think a company charging $5242 a month in rent could change your fridge water filter to the tune of $40 quarterly or semiannually... so much for luxury. All this after we did not have a working dryer in unit for laundry from October 2024 till March of 2025 due to an engineering flaw in the building's construction. Dryer vent line boosters had to be added, and it took 6 months of our 11 month lease to get working laundry. No monetary concession was given, and the only offered solution was to bring our laundry down to concierge to be scanned up to another floor with a vacant unit to do laundry. After about two weeks of this we began taking our laundry offsite and followed up weekly with nothing but "we are working on a fix" as a reply.
I haven't done the independent mold testing others have claimed to but I'm thinking after reading reviews myself that is what is next. I am a disabled veteran, and I've never had so many health problems as since the day I moved into this place. My significant other and I both have had breathing problems, migraines, fatigue, and exhaustion.
Next issue would be parking. Managment does not enforce the parking rules leaving no room for your guests when you have any and often having the resident parking area overflow. It would appear they have too many "reserved" parking spots that aren't sold and not enough other spots for the active parking tags. This is on top of what another disabled member referred to in their review a few months back with a lack of adequate handicap parking. I fought this issue with corporate and when requesting the information to do the calculations per ADA I was sent "We cannot disclose that information as it is proprietary to our profit model" The work around that was offered was $125 per month for a reserved parking space and within the first two weeks of having it other residents parked in it 3 times and again no concession was offered for the inconvenience, instead I was threatened with a $50 fine per day/occurrence for parking in guest parking to be reasonably close to...
