I visited Trader Jim’s in Cocoa Beach FL with my two children and experienced a deeply upsetting incident. I live with Crohn’s disease, a federally recognized disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). During my visit, I urgently needed restroom access due to a medical flare and politely explained my condition to the staff. They refused to allow me to use the restroom, even after I explained it was a medical emergency.
As a result, I suffered an accident in public , something no person with a chronic illness should have to endure. The lack of empathy and understanding shown was inhumane and discriminatory.
Businesses should be aware that Crohn’s disease is a protected disability, and denying access to basic facilities in a medical emergency violates both human decency and the ADA’s spirit of equal access.
