This is the best city rec center/gym that I've ever seen in a small town. For a place with just over 1,000 residents, it's pretty amazing that Deadwood has a place with a weight lifting gym, cardio room, basketball court, swimming pool, running track, handball courts, and classrooms - all indoors. People use it to work out, kids use it for a place to hang out, and school sports teams use it as a place for meets and tournaments. But most of the time - especially weekday evenings - it doesn't feel crowded in the least. The facility itself is pretty impressive, with parts housed in the 1912 stone-block civic auditorium, and the rest (mostly the pool and track) in a new annex built in 2008. Despite the age of the building, the place feels new and vibrant and bright. I run here about three times a week in the winter, and go to a yoga class once a week. Hard to imagine a better place in a town this size. Staff are friendly and seem to be well-trained. One of the standout features: it's incredibly inexpensive. Out of all the recreational centers with a pool for families in the area, this one closes the earliest every day of the week, and is not open on Sunday for any amount of time. This is especially hard on families during the winter months when there is little to do outside. For those who are not the âbutt-crack of dawnâ type of people, business hours are absolutely horrible. If you work until 5pm, have a night schedule, or do your work out in the evening... forget about it. They also cater more to adults. According to one employees comment, the insurance doesnât allow kids to do much besides play basketball, run on the track, and swim (in a pool with a cold temperature suited for adults swimming laps, not young kids or families using it for play or for the water slide).
