Agree with many reviewers here that my experience with this gym has been deeply disappointing and if I could I would like to give 0 star. I have been a member with this gym since 10 years ago and have paid for its membership and personal trainings for many years. However, even for a long-term member like myself, their lack of regard for customer service, poor attitude, and unwillingness to find reasonable solutions is alarming. I paid for a full annual membership for 2020 but only managed to use the facilities for two months before freezing my membership due to Covid-19. During the freeze, I never received any communication about refunds or options to prevent my membership from expiring. Upon returning, I was shocked to learn that my remaining 10 months of paid membership were deemed expired, with no effort from the staff to reactivate or offer any compensation for the funds I invested. They claimed to have sent a notification but couldn’t provide any proof. Both the owner and manager Rough displayed a poor attitude, even cutting off communication and asking me to leave. If they can treat a loyal 5-year member this disrespectfully and burn bridges, they can treat anyone the same way.
Based on my experience, excellent gyms are abundant in this area — Newport mall, Hamilton Park, Hoboken and Exchange Place have several nearby options with modern equipment and genuinely caring staff. You can even get access to all those gyms by using ClassPass or access all amenities including pool at Four Fitness near Newport Mall or Drip at Hoboken, whose monthly membership is even cheaper than their $90-100/month - no reason to waste your time or money here. With so many other gyms that prioritize customer satisfaction, this one simply isn’t worth the hassle. Save your energy and find a facility that values...
Read moreEquipment is adequate, however aging. Weights everywhere. Dumbells, plates everywhere. Multiple different plates of varying sizes not in the correct place make half your workout just trying to figure which plate Is what weight.
At first I thought "what can you do, it's the people that use it." But then an employee came to "clean up", but then proceeded to put random plates and dumbells back in whatever order or place he felt like it, out of pure laziness. He seemed very disgruntled, and even made a gesture to the security camera out of complaint. When I attempted to tell him that just because the plates are the same size doesn't make them the same weight hence him putting back in the wrong place, he replied with "nah its not you, it's the whole gym." And then proceeded to point at every piece of broken equipment on his way out and say "i didnt break that." OH and he only "cleaned up" a tiny corner of the gym before walking out. Why does he work here?
If the cleaninf staff spent half the time they spent complaining, on putting the proper equipment back in the right place, I can bet you everyone else in the gym would start to follow suit. They set the standard. And there is no standard to be found.
At the price you're paying for a single location gym, the only thing that makes it worth it is the pool and sauna, and maybe location if you live in the nearby condos. If you don't care about those, then you're better off just looking elsewhere.
Just to clarify thought, front desk staff is great. Friendly,...
Read moreThey did not honor their early refund policy. I purchased a 1-year membership with them, moved out of Newport at the 9-month mark, which entitles me to a partial refund for the remaining unused months. But, they never refunded me this, despite multiple polite emails to member services and the manager Jeffrey (see 2 photos).
The AC in the cardio room broke for the entire summer of 2024, from June until Sept (see photo), and it became impossible to jog for multiple weeks because the cardio room temperature burned up to 90+ degrees constantly.
They don't change their water filters on time. When the water filters expire (show red light), they just cover up the red light with a black tape to hide it. In this photo, I peeled away the black tape to show the expired filter warning light.
The roof leaks when it rains, and they just collect the water in buckets and put a "wet floor" sign around the puddle (see photo)
The equipment breaks often as well (see photo), as well as a faucet in the sink in the men's room, which had a "temporarily out of order" sign for at least half a year.
The manager Jeffrey will always give you a confident smile and warm small talk, but don't be fooled. He doesn't give you refunds back, he hikes your membership fees while shortening the operating hours of the gym, he doesn't fix broken equipment; instead, he spends your member fees on hilarious projects like renovating the stairs which were not broken to begin with, or changing the lights which were not broken...
