We love the mission and work of HMI, so we purchased a membership. However, we’ve had very mixed experiences with their tours. We did Third Ward and North Point Mansions - two off their regular tours - and they were great. Highly recommend. However, we did a specialty tour (higher ticket price, even for members) on German history and were very disappointed. The guide refused to wear his microphone properly, despite requests from guests, so sound was poor. His commentary also wasn’t quite as interesting and didn’t flow as well as other tours we’ve done. We didn’t always understand why we were looking at a particular building or what the connection was with German history. It didn’t feel worth the higher price tag at all. The employee, younger girl with brown curly hair, was not very friendly, spoke minimally, and the only words she spoke to anyone without approaching them first was to a couple where she said “you didn’t close the door!”
