The owner didn't seem the warmest at first, and it took a slightly curt exchange for me to understand she sells the licorice by weight, not one piece at a time... but once she started making me an assorted bag of "black, unsalted, chewy" licorices she made some great selections which the person I gifted them to absolutely loved. I also tried a variety of chocolates, all very authentic & old school, some great, some just good. The best were the raspberry jelly (incredible) and the marzipan.
Beyond the amazing variety and authenticity of the product, this place is truly a gem of an experience in NYC. There is no other shop like it that I've seen in the city, or elsewhere. We went in early friday, and asked to taste a licorice, and we bought a pound, then we asked to taste another, and we bought a pound, but when we asked for a third tasting, and most likely we would buy, the female blond attendant with a bored-out-of-life face, said, ‘only one tasting’ but I said ‘I already bought two pounds’ and she said that is the rule. I am there are some people who only taste and don’t but, but if you but 14 us of licorice why not get more tastings and entice more buying? Crazy rule sure Ms Mazel did not put this in. You can find Finnish cables (black and red), along with Australian soft chew licorice, lots of your standard Jelly Belly flavors in a rainbow of colors and of course her large assortment of chocolates.
