Great organization that is affiliated with a lot of nonprofit organizations, schools and churches, etc. The only organization that I know of that have volunteers mend donated coats through coat drives and not let them go to waste. I remember the time when this organization had 65 thousand active members. I have been amazed at how much energy and power is generated when people get together to empower those in need. Before covid, I tried out many different types of projects including but not limited to walking goats on Governors Island, food rescue, soup kitchens, reading for children in shelters and doing sports with people of all abilities. Before covid, the volunteers used to be able to surf, swim and run with people of all abilities, go bowling in the Special Olympics building. Occasionally team leads would not show up or be late but no big deal. Some of us have been through the team leader training so whenever that kind of thing happened, we were able to step in and sub for those days. We all went with the flow and kept things rolling. Just know that if you have 3 no-shows within a 6 months period, your account will be deactivated.

I have team leading on some projects for last 2 years and I had to just cancel my participation with this NY Cares. I missed one time (after a vacation and getting back late and missing sleep) and then the next time I was getting ready and realized I had been replaced the night before. I feel complete ingratitude and thanklessness from SELIS and NYCares and have stopped my association with them. In the 2 years I volunteeered on a regular basis with SELIS I never got any real feeling of being thanked. they were very polite and asking the regular volunteers to come back but I just felt very taken for granted to keep coming back. Not just one or two staff there but the entire staff except for maybe the receptionist who was friendly. I just don't understand and today was really the last straw. I will find a different organization that hopefully values me

I mean I had team led back in 2012 and a volunteer project was canceled without lettting me know and volunteers shows up and I had to tell them it was canceled so I left the organization back then. When I went back in 2023 I thought it would be different but I felt very unappreciated esp at SELIS. The coordinator knew I was coming on Thurs and still the replacement without...

I have been with volunteering with New York Cares for almost two years now and it's been great. I have had so many great experiences with them. I've shelved books, taken photographs on New York Cares day, got to built cool lego robots with elementary students, played board games, sorted clothes, etc... You just earn lots of experience while volunteering. I've learned a lot of things while volunteering, that I wouldn't have learned otherwise. I've also met a lot of cool people all over the city while volunteering. I've heard cool stories, bonded over being from Queens, gotten cool tips to local restaurants wherever I'm volunteering. ...
