If you want croissants, go you a French bakery like L'amour du Pan. These croissants are terrible. The baguettes are also not good - they are too salty and have cornmeal on the bottom.
I was not very impressed with any product I tried here. I had some hopes for the topfengolatsche, but unfortunately the layers were thick and few, and the filling was too sweet. Honestly, the ones they sell at Billa are better.
The redeeming quality is that the ingredients are supposedly sourced well. But at €4 for a topfengolatsche, I want it to at least taste good. People tell me to give them a break, because they're doing it to old-fashioned farmhouse way. I used to work as a baker on a farm, and we made better stuff for cheaper. I think Öfferl is just a very successful brand name and the tourists get it in their head that it's good stuff, and maybe this convinces the locals to like it too. I'm...
Read moreÖfferl is one of my favorite bakeries in Vienna particularly for pastries. I often pop by on my way to work to grab a coffee and a baked good. Topfengolatche is my favorite one. Something about their recipe with almost sticky gooey dough and delicious cheese makes it the best one in Vienna for me. I also still can’t get over the discontinuation of pan a raspberry and custard crème (pic. 2). 🥲 this was my hyper-fixation for a while when it was available. Unfortunately, at least at the Shottengasse location, the quality of cappuccino is not always consistent. I guess it’s understandable and depends on the person who makes it who might be still going through training. In any case I would always recommend Öfferl for baked goods. For salty things, pastrami sandwich is a good...
Read moreHad a croissant, pain au chocolates, and a cappuccino here. Croissant was not as great as I had expected. This could have been because everyone I know in Vienna said this is the best place for croissant. It was very moist but quite dense and not flaky.
Pain au chocolat had similar texture, but the bonus was definitely the oozing chocolate inside. I dipped that in a cappuccino and it was fantastic. As I was asked for serving option, I chose dine in. The croissant was served on plates, but I wished they would have served the coffee in a proper mug instead of...
