After extensive research for our 8th anniversary special meal, the missus and I luckily found ourselves seated in a cozy nook at The Mexican Corner, and in the process we were transported briefly to Mexico for a wholesome lunch! And following a few hours zip-lining on the snowy slopes of Whistler, the flavorful and sumptuous meal here was just what the doctor ordered.
The place was jam-packed on the freezing cold evening of the Family Day holiday when we walked in not-so-confidently without a reservation in tow, but we were so relieved when the kind host promptly ushered us to a table! Having visited Mexico a couple of times in 2018-19 and having an extremely soft corner in our hearts for anything Mexican (people, food, music, vibes, hues et all), the two of us immediately fell in love with the colorful decor and vibrant ambiance, and it felt like we were somewhere we belonged.
We were already feeling quite hungry when we entered the place, so the aromas wafting around simply whetted our appetites and the growling of our empty stomachs added to the buzz of the busy restaurant. Thankfully Natasha came to our rescue right away with awesome recommendations, and then served us with delish drinks and yummilicious food oh-so-quickly despite the crowd! Muchas gracias.
The drinks menu is extensive with many neat cocktail options, and Mezcal lovers such as myself will be spoilt for choice. We ordered the Passionfruit Mezcalita and Oaxacan Old Fashioned, and both were yummm hic
To get started we ordered The Three Amigos for the table, and it is a perfect starter to share. This is a not-to-be-missed combo of their signature Guacamole and Pico de Gallo served with corn tortilla chips, Molcajete salsa and Habanero hot salsa. The biggest surprise was getting to relish the Sikil Pak, something we've not experienced outside of Yucatan, let alone in Canada!? No way! 💯
For the mains, we opted for the Ash Rubbed Ahi Tuna, and it was a great choice. The Ahi Tuna is seared with a chile ash rub, and is served with silky butternut squash puree, rajas poblanas and toasted pumpkin seeds. Must try!
And no Mexican meal of ours feels complete without Tacos, so we went for a choice of three – a mix & match of Short Rib Barbacoa, Pork Pastor and Duck Mole. The Duck Mole taco was the best of the lot, but the other two were ok with the Pastor being a bit on the drier side and slightly disappointing.
We would've gladly opted for a dessert but sadly they don't have any on the menu. Hopefully they do plan on including some sweets to complement their savory delicacies, and though Churros would be a nice addition, given their Yucatan influence I pray that they start offering Marquesitas (another personal favorite that I'm yet to find anywhere outside of that piece of Quintana Roo)! fingers and toes crossed
All said and done, kudos to the management and staff for recreating the Mexican experience so far away from its roots. The Mexican Corner is surely one of the best restaurants in Whistler, and possibly in the Lower Mainland...
Read moreWe have had the privilege to be able to go to Whistler once a year for a few days with friends and family in the last few years. We went to mexican corner about 4 or 5 years ago and we really enjoyed the atmosphere, the food and the friendliness of the restaurant. And the value was also great for a family (yes it was still a little pricey but for the value/$ still wasn’t too bad in relative terms). So every year we try and eat there. When we went this year with another family the food was okay but the value dropped a lot - dropped like the 2008 stock market crash (yes a little sarcasm on my part). What we remember from before is that every meal came with Mexican rice and black beans. Now these are no longer included in the price and are additional sides. The portions are smaller as well. With COVID I expect there would be some increases in prices and some cost cutting but it seemed kind of out of proportion here as compared to other establishments.
However what actually was problematic (and what really soured our desire to return) was us being charged for something that we did not order. We had a parent table and a kid table. We ordered the pico de gallo and chips for both tables. At our table the waiter brought more chips and some salsa (not the pico) that we did not order. We presumed that this was free refill since we didn’t ask for it (we didn’t really get a chance to say “no” - it just got brought by our waiter. After both families paid our bills and left we realized afterwards that they had charged us for the “refill” chips and salsa at the same price as if we ordered the pico. Frankly that was uncool and underhanded to do that. If we realized it at the time, the waiter would not have gotten the tip we gave him and would have certainly asked them to take that off our bill. It wasn’t much in comparison to the total bill but it’s the principle of charging someone for something they didn’t order. For that kind of underhanded thing I would have only given 10% tip (I know some would say they wouldn’t tip at all but that’s not nice either).
Not everyone who goes to Whistler is necessarily well off and not worried about getting value - so before anyone says if you can afford to go to Whistler, you don’t need value, that is not true. Plenty of hard working families saving to do these things.
So we won’t be going back with any family or friends moving forward. It’s not on a list of restaurants I would recommend people to if asked. (We used to recommend them all the time to friends and coworkers). It’s too bad. We really used to...
Read moreYummy food in Whistler. I didn’t have a reservation and surprisingly my family and I were seated right away. The restaurant was full, so we ended up getting really lucky! It’s not a large restaurant so they do fill up quickly. I do recommend you have a reservation especially on a weekend. They don’t have an extensive menu which I don’t usually mind. However, I was a bit unhappy they didn’t have burritos on the menu as I feel that’s pretty standard at a Mexican restaurant. My husband ordered 3 different types of tacos and I ordered the Verde enchiladas. For children they offer a cheese quesadilla without sides, 1 chicken enchilada with beans/rice, or a taco. We opted for the cheese quesadilla which he didn’t enjoy unfortunately.
Short Rib Barbacoa taco- this was nice. It had a nice smokiness to it and it was really juicy and tender. Baja Fish taco- this was also really good. Nice and crunchy on the outside with a soft and flaky fish. The sauce/toppings really complimented the fish nicely. Baja cauliflower- I unfortunately didn’t enjoy this and I love vegetarian foods! In my opinion it just tasted like fried cauliflower. The florets were also really large, so it was awkward to eat. Also, the sauce/toppings didn’t seem like enough so there wasn’t much to taste besides the fried cauliflower. Enchiladas Verde- These were good. The Verde sauce wasn’t extremely tangy and it had a nice kick at the end. The chicken looked and tasted like it was like just boiled in water without seasoning, maybe salt was added? So really the flavor was coming from the sauce and cheese on top. It was soft and tender though. Cheese Enchiladas- my son unfortunately didn’t enjoy these. I forgot to ask what kind of cheese was used for these, but I think the taste was a bit strong for him. Rice and beans on the side- these were nothing special. Ordinary in my opinion. Mango margarita- This tasted like a typical margarita. They used tajin around the rim and some on top which I didn’t like. But I also don’t enjoy Tajin to begin with.
We tried to order dessert but for some reason dessert was unavailable. Decent spot for Mexican food. Not sure if I would go back. They are very busy so make sure you order apps so you have something to munch on while waiting for your entrees. I would give this...
