First time trying Czech food and I really enjoyed it. We went for the svíčková na smetaně (beef, cream sauce, and bread dumplings) and a chicken schnitzel with mashed potatoes. The svíčková was delicious, but the chicken and potatoes were like a cheap store bought frozen meal, only ok. The interior of the restaurant had a nice old feel to it and there were very few tourists (from what we could see), so it felt like a proper Czech experience. I do feel that the service could be a lot better, particularly with regards to English signage on the tickets given to you at the entrance, as there is no English signage once inside the restaurant (but there is outside). You have to keep your ticket, grab a tray that is somewhat out of the way, and then walk up to the line and say what number dish you want, followed by your drink. We were very clearly tourists so I think the server at the entrance should at least point in the direction of what we were supposed to do and go. Make sure to keep your ticket when you leave as you need to hand it up and pay at the exit. If you lose your ticket then you are fined 500 koruna, equivalent to 20 Euro. I will come back when I return to Prague, but I think the restaurant needs to work on making itself more accommodating to the many non-Czech speaking visitors that wish to enjoy the local food here.

havelská koruna is a canteen style czech restaurant located in old town. it’s a no-frills spot to try a lot of different traditional czech food for some of the lowest prices in the area. in my opinion though, you’re getting what you pay for lines vary but when we went for dinner there was only a short queue. grab a tray, look at the menu (pictures and english) and take a seat to eat. bring your ticket to the exit in order to pay when you leave. i got the half portion (~70czk) of the goulash with bread dumplings (they charged 18czk. the half portion is good if you’re not hungry but the amount of beef is very small and the dish is mainly sauce. i found it to be too salty for me. the bread dumplings were standard. my mom got the #1 dish, the steak with cream sauce and bread dumplings. the cream sauce is quite sweet which i wasn’t expecting and wasn’t really my preference. the steak doesn’t taste like steak, more like regular meat. good portion size for normal order. overall it’s a good place to try czech dishes low risk because it is inexpensive. however, i thought the food tasted so so (maybe i just didn’t like the dishes we ordered though). it would be good to come with friends and split a bunch of dishes. they also have a dessert counter too

Rude, horrible service. Don’t visit! Please avoid this place unless you want to experience prison level kind of service. I went there with my family after online recommendations from the locals. My daughter said she wouldn’t eat when we entered and put the paper they given her at the entrance in the bin so the woman at the front started shouting at her, pulled the paper out of the bin and given to my daughter who didn’t understand what’s happening. Apparently if you don’t present this piece of paper you are charged 500 at the exit. The young guy at the drinks station slammed our drink on the tray so hard that they spilled and almost bounced. I’ve also overheard an American lady asking in the most polite way where can she get a glass. In response the woman who was writing numbers for the dishes ordered rolled her eyes up and swore at the woman in Czech. To the locals they are all lovely and smiley. All the food was quite dry and tasteless, Fanta and Cola watered down. All in all there are plenty of places to eat in Prague with prices only slightly higher so would definitely not recommend this place.

We got the potato dumplings stuffed with smoked meat, and the Szeged goulash and bread dumplings. The food was delicious, big portions, good price, and still piping hot. However, the staffs did not seem to know English well, and some of them were rude and unwilling to help to foreigners in the restaurant, but for us who can speak Czech, everything went smoothly. The canteen restaurant concept here was quite confusing at first, since there were no signs or instructions for tourists. Basically: you get a slip of paper at the door; you can look at the menu and decide what you want to get; you go queue up; by the counter you can get tray and cutlery; come up to the lady sitting at the beginning of the food line and tell her what you want; she writes the number on your paper; they give you your plate; you go sit down and eat; keep the paper to pay at the door on your way out. It was a decent experience there, but the food was good!

Canteen-style restaurant with relatively low prices. The food is tasty; I can definitely recommend stuffed dumplings with smoked meat and sauerkraut. On the other hand, the other food looks (and tastes) a little bit cheap. The service, as many have complained, is subpar, though. While I didn't have any problems as a native and the staff was actually nice to me, they are quite rude towards internationals. I can understand it can get (and it was!) busy during rush hours, which makes them frustrated, but please, treat your customers right. The interior is authentic to the previous century. I believe it is time for an upgrade to make the seating more comfortable, too. Sitting on high chairs or wooden benches is a little downside to the overall experience. As a side note: if you are coming here, prepare to wait in a long queue. The place can get pretty busy, and you can wait up to 20 minutes until you get a turn.

So we naively thought that this was not a very touristy place. Oh boy how wrong we were. Around 2pm on a Tuesday the line was out to the middle of the street. When you get inside, you get a piece of paper (with a fine if you lose it!) on which the staff will write what you have ordered and you pay at the exit accordingly. You better figure out your order beforehand, because there is little time/patience from the serving staff when you finally reach them. The quantity is more than enough, the quality resembles a good home meal. The seating is a bit chaotic, so is the restroom situation (down the stairs, so no wheelchair access). They really should move into a bigger facility and also move the dessert station to the end, not the first stand. The price worths the food, but not the crowd. (You can order online takeaway, maybe that's the best option)
