I did not enjoy my stay here. However that is absolutely not the fault of the hotel. Before I get into that, let's look at some of the many solid positives.||Location is great. Right opposite the astronomical clock. Lots to see and all the old town features easy to reach. The castle is a bit of a hike. Two considerations. No cars in the square so your taxi will have to drop you off on the otherwise. The hotel is difficult to get to and the front crowded on the hour. This never caused us to much trouble.||Breakfast is in the Mozart cafe and was excellent. Good variety of local and international treats with daily surprises. The cakes were unsurprisingly wonderful. One negative is that because the cafe is open to the public, the loos were a bit of a mess at times.||The appointment of the main hotel is splendid. The reception staff helpful and friendly. English nit always great with complex conversation, but not a real problem. On our last day, they were really kind and brought our cases down from the annex. They were both a little poorly, so I hope they have recovered.||Now we get to the real problem, and why we did not enjoy our stay. This is absolutely the responsibility of our booking agent Thomas Cook, and not the hotel. We were put in an annex about 5 buildings away with a separate entrance and no reception. The annex is a bit shabby, but charmingly antique. No real issue with that. The problem was the room was up several flights of stairs on the top floor and there is NO lift. The room itself was huge and the bathroom just as big with a separate toilet cubical. There were problems with the room with a very bad odour from the drains. The windows had to be left open the whole time and looked out onto an area used by the staff and builders. It was noisy during the day and we were concerned about security.||Overall the lack of a lift was the only big negative. As a consequence we avoided going back to the hotel. We were exhausted and could not enjoy Prague as much as we should have. It felt like a boot camp, and we definately should have been warned by the agents.||We asked to change rooms on the first night but nothing was available. We even offered to pay extra. When we could hardly cope, mid week I contacted Thomas Cook and they ridiculously asked for compensation. We did not want compensation and we were very cross with them.||If you are fit and healthy or are staying in the main hotel I would agree with a 5 star review. For us, later in life, I am afraid it was a...
Read moreThis property is a one-of-a-kind. In the 4 days we walked around Prague, there was no other hotel location or view that could have been compared to Grand Hotel Praha. The views from the room were absolutely breathtaking, and the hotel is located in the most beautiful part of Prague is Old Town Square. Staying here also allowed us to walk to all of our destinations with ease (we never had to use the car, even to walk the short distance across the other side of the river and town!). The hotel has a great breakfast with many good and fresh options, and the meal selection located downstairs in cafe Mozart was also amazing. Any and every type of food option is within a short walking distance. The staff was absolutely amazing, and incredibly kind and helpful throughout our stay. Every single of them truly contributed to giving us the most magical stay in this beautiful city. A heads up for travelers that are early sleepers- you are located RIGHT in the center of old town square, bringing many people to gather the streets at night and also to see the views of the Astronomical Clock Tower (especially later in the day/ night.) We found this to actually be a huge positive of the trip, as it was a brilliant sight to see every hour, but some people may not!
This is not a complaint, only a suggestion! Valet service is very convenient since parking can be difficult in bigger cities and seeing the city's beautiful sites require lots of walking. However, the valet service does park the car a few blocks up the road and proved a little bit difficult with all of our luggage and bags. A cart/ luggage trolley would have been helpful to/from the hotel from the lot. This in no way took away from the brilliance of this hotel, and is only a small suggestion!
We will be back, and will always stay here! Will forever recommend! Thank you...
Read moreIdeal location on Old Town Square, albeit a bit overcrowded around the clock's chiming times. Very convenient to explore the whole city centre by foot, we just took tram 22 to get to the castle, otherwise most attractions are accessible in a 10mn walk. |As for the hotel itself, we ended up in the annex, 2 buildings away from the main entrance of the hotel. The room was large and comfortable, and so was the bathroom. It was quiet as opening on a back street. Only drawback was that there was no elevator and about 107 steps up and down to get to our room. I hear that it is common in old town buildings. We got used to it, but when leaving in the morning we made sure that we had not forgotten anything as you would think twice before getting back to the room to fetch it!. Also being in the annex meant we had to go outside via old town square to get to breakfast, which was served in the main building. Breakfast was fine, good choice of bread, food and drinks, both savoury and sweet ( being french we are not used to having such a big meal for breakfast as citizens from anglo-saxon countries). View from the breakfast room was fantastic (old town square, city hall and clock). The hotel's location is also ideal for strolling and shopping in the pedestrian area between old town square and Nove Mesto. It is to be noted that the hotel is in a pedestrian area, so whether arriving by cab or public transport you will have to walk 100 m or more with your luggage (it was not an issue for us but could be for some travellers). Overall we had a good stay and Prague is a...
