MASH is situated right at the top of the hotel tower and promises to be an experience in meat!
Well let's start at the beginning. I arrived in Denmark fairly late and stayed across the road. My options were limited there so I headed over after a quick search on maps to MASH. Taking the lift to the top where the penthouse bar and outside terrace looked super inviting despite the weather, I was greeted at the entrance by the host.
I didn't have a booking but that was no problem and as I was dining solo probably made it easier. Later on there were many groups and the place filled up so perhaps look at reserving a table if you are a group or dining after 7pm.
Your staff are impeccable, courteous and professional. I found them incredibly knowledgeable and super friendly. So kudos to them all.
I started with the Argentine Prawns in teriyaki. Perfectly cooked, three substantially sized prawns and a perfectly complimentary garnish of wasabi, avocado and nori. It was delicious and a perfect start.
To follow and after a little chat with the server I settled on the 300g Rib Eye, dry aged. On the side I ordered their apparently famous truffle fries and a tomato salad. Simple accompanying dishes not to detract from the steak. I ordered medium rare and was recommended a small glass of the pinot noir to go with it. A full flavoured steak with a lighter red.
Well the steak came and served on its own with a sprig of rosemary and a light coating of butter glaze, and it looked incredible.
Now I've had steaks from various places and I was expecting something special....it wasn't the flavour, it was the fact the med rare was a few seconds away from blue in parts and the toughness surprised me. Not to say it wasn't a tasty cut, but it didn't wow me like the starter had done. The fires were very nice but again, nothing special here but they did get a little lost in the flavour of the meat. The salad was fresh and chunky and was actually a really good choice for this meal, perhaps I could have left the fries out tbh. The wine worked well, but I'm not an expert, I like what I like and this tasted good. I missed my french mustard and while Dijon is good, a nice dark french mustard would have been way better.
I checked out the desserts and you would have had me if the crème brulé was available but today it was missing from the menu, next time though!!
It was a good meal. The atmosphere is subdued but buzzing. It's intimate but open plan and I would definitely come here again. While my view wasn't breathtaking it was a relief and I enjoyed a little reading while sitting there.
I will be back,...
Read moreFirst impression you get when arriving at the top floor where the restaurant is situated, is 3 toilet doors and people standing in queue. One of the toilets where out of order, where the other two toilets where so unhygienic that they either had urin on the floor or chewing gum on the toilet seat. We were greeted by a professional staff who took our jackets and coats and showed us to our reserved table. The waiter gave us our menu and told us that he would be back in "a couple of minutes". For me it took more than "a couple of minutes". All in all, It took us half an hour to receive our drinks, even though the place wasn't full. The starter that I ordered, the Carpaccio, was super basic, not so appetising or tasteful. It didn't come as in the menu description. Just came with the parmesan cheese on top of the protein. There was no olive oil, lemon or taste of pepper. We received our main dishes with our side orders an hour after being seated. The side orders were very basic and not really presented in a different way than it would be at a regular diner. The Mørbrad, 200g that I took as Medium well, was very nicely cooked even thou I would say it was unevenly cooked. The cheesecake for dessert was very basic, tasted very nice, but nothing special about it. The round tables are way too small for a group of 6 individuals. We were literally nudging each others plates when eating. Upon leaving we noticed that the menu cards was situated next to the toilets, something that would be more visible if it was displayed at the restaurant entrance rather than the same wall as the toilets. They were also hung uneven in the display, and visibly taped together. For the price level that Mash want to identify with, it is for me not worthy more than above rating. There is a lot to improve to increase the overall impression. One very important aspect of identifying as an exclusive restaurant is to remember who ordered what, all from the drinks, through the entire dining experience. We were directing the staff on who had...
Read moreOverall, my MASH Penthouse experience was solid, but perhaps I expected something more.
I was eating alone, and so took a chance as a walk-in. I was greeted by some thoroughly charming staff who found me a table immediately. Without any sense of pressure, I was attended to and offered a drink within minutes of settling in. Service was very efficient and smooth, and I was given just the right amount attention throughout the dinner. I interacted with perhaps 5 or 6 staff members for the duration of my stay, all of whom were impeccably professional, whilst also relaxed. I couldn’t really fault the service.
Generally, the food was good. The oysters were outstanding, and I could’ve eaten 20 of them - incredibly fresh, perfectly shucked, and unadulterated. What really caught my attention on the menu was a Danish 90-day dry-aged ribeye. It was an easy choice from there, and so I ordered that with a green salad, plus some MASH herb butter.
I ordered the steak medium rare, but it was perhaps a little closer to rare when I received it. Not a problem per se, but perhaps worth mentioning. The steak was good, but somewhat disappointing too, since it tasted very similar to a standard (albeit a high standard) rib-eye. There’s a chance that my expectations got the better of me, but I thought 90 days of dry ageing would’ve created some much funkier flavours. Alas...
Apart from the steak, everything else was very good and I...
