Probably we were unlucky to hit a waitress with little motivation to service guests - so keep that in mind when reading this review.
Place was packed and welcome was done in the door friendly and energetic. We were guided to the table which was nicely situated in the back of the restaurant which due to a lot of hard surfaces has terrible acoustics. For people who like to have a conversation that is a watch out without having to speak really loud.
Service at the table was non-existing. We were 10 people and had booked a pre-set menu including 2 glasses of wine. It seemed as a problem that some one also wanted to start with a beer and you could already feel that waitress was quite annoyed by having to service each guest rather than the total group at once. So reluctantly she started to write down additional drinks and shortly after came back with some wine she thought would be good. Without asking she poured 10 huge glasses of a sour sparkling wine which was inferior in quality to the rest of the experience. Several did not take more than a zip and we in addition ordered bottle of red wine. I asked her kindly if anyone could recommend and tell a bit of the wines in the wine menu ranging from roughly 400 DKK to 1300 DKK. She basically responded I can.. do you need red or white? and that was it.. the bottle she returned with was fine but really cold.. probably 5-6 degrees which arguably is to the cold side for reds... anyway friendly as we are we did not complaint and just accepted.
Food was really good.. nice starters, ok main and fair dessert. just after starter the waitress came back and stated now I am going to find some dessert wine so you can have your second glass (the one included in the menu). We all said no to dessert wine being served at the main course which also tended to annoy her more...
So bottom line - a place that for many probably is a home run - this experience was strange and related to 1 individual only - so feels unfair to award only two stars...
but given that it is a service business it is difficult to envision how this ever become a success unless you have clear expectation management also among staff. Everyone can have a bad day - but then make those work behind the scenes and not front guests.
Would I go again - unlikely. CPH food scene is so full of places that strive to make it a real experience for...
Read moreWe visited Gorilla on a Saturday evening without a reservation having been turned away from a couple of other restaurants. Fortunately the maître d'hôtel took pity and located a lovely window seat for us inside the restaurant.
For fun we decided to go for the 10-course tasting menu (a 7-course option is also available) and settled in to enjoy the experience. Given that one of us doesn't eat meat and the other doesn't eat fish we weren't sure what to expect but our waitress made sure that the kitchen met both of our diverse needs!
This meant that we were soon supplied with a selection of starters, both fish and meat, which were all delicious. Then came a fish/veg course followed by a meat/veg course and then a pairing of pastas. The latter was rather bland but the preceding fish and meat offerings were fresh and excellent.
To round off the meal two different and equally tasty desserts arrived. I particularly liked the deconstructed apple crumble but equally the sharp lemon/lime sorbet really cleaned the palette.
In terms of atmosphere the place was really humming with groups large and small having a great time. The staff handled everyone very efficiently with a particular highlight being when they broke out the drum and trumpet for an impromptu celebration!
All in all we enjoyed a great evening at Gorilla and considered ourselves lucky to find wind up in such a lively joint. If you're looking to have a good time then Gorilla comes highly...
Read moreA relative of one of our favorite Copenhagen restaurants, Pluto, my friend and I made 9 p.m. Sunday reservations at Restaurant Gorilla. Here's our experience:
Food: Like most patrons, we ordered the chef's tastings, which comes with ten courses spread out over a few hours. Wine and drinks are separate from the tasting. To start, four appetizers came out with a warm plate of bread and salted butter. Then a fish dish, meats, endives and two desserts came out. Each dish was solid, but only the kombucha ice cream and one of the appetizers were out of this world.
Space: It's a large restaurant with tables throughout the space, including in the windows. We sat at a small table elevated in the window.
Location: It's in the trendy meat packing district surrounded by top restaurants and cafes.
Price: For an expensive city, our chef's tasting was around $65 per person- not bad compared to other restaurants!
Service: It was really good! Our reservations was at 9 p.m., but they let us in around 7:30 p.m. Each server explained each dish in Danish or English. The only odd thing was the spacing. There were large gaps in between courses and the entire experience took...
