As a world traveler with an affinity for baked goods I make it a point to visit renowned bakeries in whatever town or city I visit. To put it plainly, these simply “okay” baked goods were spoiled probably one of the most obviously annoyed baristas/ servers I’ve ever experienced. I hadn’t been looking at their pastry selections for more than even 2 minutes when I noticed there were samples. Before I was even able to take a bite the obviously bothered employee gruffly asked “are you going to buy anything?” Thus began an interaction that no matter how patient or warm I tried to be I was met with eye rolls, huffing and puffing and general indignation.
After asking for a cappuccino I got a reaction that left me confused as if I had asked for an impossible request.
I ordered my things for take away and parked at a high top table to quickly sweeten my cappuccino and set my things down that was kindly shared to me by another patron and before I could I even finish stirring she comes whirling from the behind the counter to tell me “you can’t stand here” first saying it in finnish and then repeating herself two more times as I tried to understand what she was telling me- her irritation with me growing with each time. I could see the gentleman at the end of the table also looking very shocked as I had noticed she had a very pleasant interaction with him and the other patrons in the store.
Overall, incredibly disappointing from a very mid place that I was excited to visit. I won’t directly say that it was because of my skin color or anything like that but one has to wonder if that plate part in it. She was incredibly rude and really has left me no other Reason to ever suggest anyone going to this place when I had better pastries at the pastry shop inside their mall.
As for the food again, it was just...

Read moreA Helsinki gem since 1852! Always good service and phenomenal baked goods. I have a soft spot for their daily breakfast and their weekend brunch. Highly recommend everyone to try either as a treat for a lovely start to the day. Their brunch is more extensive and you get sample a bit of everything from their offerings. The breakfast is a great example of Nordic brekkie.
The main cafe part is very beautiful inside and well maintained after all these years. One of my favorite things has always been their terrace. During the summers it’s lovely to sit outside while cramming a few croissants.
The separate bakery is where I frequent the most, which they seemed to have modernized with an automatic glass slide door since my last visit. The inside is tastefully decorated and incredibly elegant, with the breads, pastries and food items displayed similar to nicer boulangeries you might see in Paris. They have some limited seating by the window for you to enjoy your treats asap. The free flavored water by the side is a nice additional touch.
Basically... pace yourself and don’t let the visual stimulation get to you while making your purchases. You’ll want to return several times to try everything. Family favorites: Budapest for cake and the croissants for pastry.
In terms of price it’s more than your regular supermarket bakery (which has its own charm) but definitely you get what...
