We came to Oinopiio on the recommendation of our hotel, who kindly called ahead and made a reservation for us at 9pm. We’d suggest doing the same, as we saw several people turned away while we were dining.
The service was the best we've had in Crete. The staff were knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly knew the menu well.
But the real highlight is the food. The quality and flavour were a clear 10 out of 10.
We ordered three dishes. One as a starter, and two as mains. Each one was excellent and we’d recommend them all.
To start, we had the Λαχανικά σχάρας σε Σφακιανή πίτα με σως μελιού και καβουρδισμένο αμύγδαλο (grilled vegetables in Sfakiani pita with honey sauce and roasted almonds). It was full of flavour without being too heavy.
For mains, we chose the Σφακιανό (slow-cooked lamb with olive oil and Cretan wine sauce). The lamb was incredibly tender and fell off the bone, served with golden potato fries that paired perfectly with the rich sauce.
We also had the Χανιώτικη κρεατότουρτα / χειροποίητη κρεατόπιτα (homemade meat pie with lamb, cheese, and herbs). It was rustic, with a crisp golden crust and a delicious, well-seasoned filling.
To finish, we were served panna cotta and raki on the house, which was a lovely way to end the evening.
Highly recommend this restaurant. It’s traditional, classic, and...
Read moreThe food is ok (but i think saganaki cheese is not fried feta). The thing that dissapointed most of all was a really bad service.
First of all, we saw a table outside and asked waiter, if we could sit there, he said ok. Then we were waiting for a menu for about 10 minutes, but nobody came. We called another waiter and he said that we could sit only inside, because this tables were reservation only (btw there was not any "reserve" sign). We explained situation and he agreed with us.
Than another waiter took our order and forgot to bring our soft drinks. We reminded about our drinks many times, but nothing happened.
Badly upset, we tried to ask for the bill, but that was not easy. Our waiter didn't look in our direction at all and prefer to chat with neighbours walking near restaurant. Thx god some of them showed him our table:-)
In the bill we saw our soft drinks in amount of 0 euro (ok, that's fair) and 2.6 euro for bread, that we didn't order and didn't touch at all. In normal places you are asked if you need bread or you don't charged, if you don't eat. Our third waiter said that it is cover (coperto) and we should pay for this (i repeat, that in the bill you'll see word "ψωμί" - bread in...
Read moreRACIST experience at this establishment! Went to this place super excited, but the guy in charge of seating (old bald dude) said no tables were available despite a million open tables. We asked if we could make a reservation for later or another day and he replied by saying he couldn’t tell us if that was possible and just acted extremely cold. We felt odd but didn’t want to believe this was indeed racism. We then had our hotel call on our behalf for a last minute reservation and they got us one with no problems. We then showed up again, and stood behind another party. The same old bald guy didn’t see us and when the party ahead of us asked for a table, they were seated without a reservation! I then confronted the guy about how the white folks in front of us got a table without a problem but we couldn’t get one initially and he had no answer. I then told him our hotel actually got us a reservation, but I couldn’t get myself to eat at an establishment after being treated like a second class citizen and told the guy he was racist and walked out.
If you’re any kind of immigrant or a person who believes racism is wrong, avoid this restaurant on a moral ground. I don’t care how good people say...
