Caffè Barbarani — Restaurant in Verona

After walking around lovely Verona a while, we took a seat here for a quick lunch. I know it screams tourist trap, but was a positive surprise. Ok, the menu is not really innovative, but they have a nice drinks list and the restaurants on the Piazza Bra are a lot worse with their pushy staff and set-menus.

Since we planned to visit the brillant "Osteria del Bugiardo" later on, we decided on some "lighter" items. We ordered the veal roast plate and a selection of salumi. First we had a bunch of Aperol Spritz with and later another drink. It was actually a Slushee for kids, but we've asked the waiter to pour some vodka in it...making it a grown-up drink perfect for summer. Service was amused, but brought the drinks, that's not on the list, moments later.

The veal roast was quite good, the sides nothing special. The salumi plate was nicely presented, quality was fine, but not great. But everything for 48 Euros was a fair enough price for a city like this and its location.

I have to really say that the staff in general was really friendly and attentive. Did not excpect that from this location and due to the fact that it is a quite busy restaurant. Kudos to the host / owner and the staff! And: Our dog was more than welcome here.

Great food, really friendly staff, affordable prices considering the location, as the bar is located at the central square of Verona, close to Casa de Juliette. As this was my second day in Italy, I ordered the traditional spaghetti with ragu sauce and a glass of red wine. The menu is much wider than that and offers traditional dishes of Verona, platters, and a good selection of pastas and pizza. I took no photos as my phone was charging, but the food was truly delicious. A photo of the main square in the evening to show how pretty the main square is.

The place offers a great selection of cocktails and drinks- definitely worth stopping by of you are in Verona in the evening. Have a look in other reviews- the images are accurate.

I was a solo female traveler: the staff took care of me: charged my phone. The owner suggested maps and places to visit. I had a good chat with the staff member, which is always appreciated when you travel alone. Thank you...

Afosa notte d'agosto, ore 2:46..stanco e spossato mi dirigo per un caffè al primo bar in zona, non sapevo però a cosa stavo andando incontro; ebbene sì, stavo per entrare nel peggior bar in cui io abbia mai messo piede! "Cosa vuoi?" mi chiede il primo barista "Un caffè!" rispondo io. Fino a qui tutto nella norma, la situazione degenera quando esterno la mia richiesta al resto del personale (in quel momento tutto dietro al bancone). Una sontuosa risata collettiva si erge all'interno della stanza, vengo sbeffeggiato e deriso da tutti quanti i baristi (5/6 persone tutte di sesso maschile). A rispondermi in maniera diretta è uno di loro che, più ilare rispetto agli altri, indicando il suo orologio bestemmia e mi dice, con spocchiosa ironia, come sia possibile che "uno" venga a chiedere un caffè alle 2:46 della notte. Come se fossi stato in dovere di dar risposta (il cliente aveva sempre ragione un tempo no?) giustifico la mia ordinazione con un "sono stanco, un caffè mi tirerebbe su". A questo punto, però, si scatena la vena ironica, ricca di ipocrisia, del suddetto barman che, con un bel sorrisone strafottente, mi consiglia di andare nella piazzetta lì vicino per poter comprare qualcosa che (a detta sua) mi avrebbe tenuto sveglio "anche quattro giorni". Capito ormai di esser capitato nel posto sbagliato, giro i tacchi ed esco dal locale salutando cordialmente. Non tutto nella vita è dovuto, ma chiedere un caffè all'interno di un bar (aperto anche a quell'ora.. come dimostravano i numerosi clienti ancora seduti ai tavoli di fronte ad esso) penso che sia qualcosa di normale in qualsiasi momento della giornata. Ciò che mi ha dato fastidio, potrete capire, è stato l'atteggiamento del personale. Mi è stato consigliato di andare a comprar droga (presumo) nella piazzetta di fianco, sono stato respinto malamente e con scortesia; tali comportamenti non sono ammissibili all'interno di un bar situato in una così bella zona della città scaligera.
