I was recommended here by a local friend of mine. We got their signature traditional fish soup with milk but opted for the fried fish fillet instead of fish head so we wouldn't have to deal with fish bones. I am unsure how was the portion size in the past as there were many complaints saying that they serve very limited fish fillet, meatballs and etc for the price they charge. However, I can clearly say that I was satisfied with the portion and the serving sizes in my visit. Let's talk about the soul of steamboat which is of course their signature fish soup. I felt that their tastes and flavors were well balanced. The savory element is complemented by a hint of appetising tang and the milk beautifully enriches the soup without overwhelming everything else. This is a plus as the soup base will get more concentrated and richer over time so unless it's tuned right, it may end up to be too salty for your tastebuds. The fried fish fillets were decent. It has a thin layer of batter coating but I suggest to only soak them in the soup briefly. Otherwise, the batter simply becomes soggy and ruins the texture. The meatballs were quite a good addition. I enjoyed the well seasoned meatballs and the nice bounce in its texture. The other ingredients were pretty standard in my opinion. Their house made sambal was a good condiment giving you a bump in umami and evidently bits of shrimps to add a...
Read moreTL;DR, fish hotpot with great service but situated at a horrible location.
The shop is located at a small narrow street, surrounded by food courts and night time hawkers. 'Stiff competition' for the food industry. To make matters worse, parking was just impossible. Probably could only fit two sedan sized vehicals in the front of the shop. You probably have better luck getting parking space two streets down, instead of going in circles. Ignorant drivers would just stop by the side of the narrow road just for their very own convenience and create congestion for other road users.
Food was quick to order. Served promptly. Somehow the broth started out bland but it got better and denser throughout the night. You get refills for your broth and the condiment counter is a must to kick things up a notch. Their shrimp sambal is a must with that extra kick of savouriness.
Servers were helpful and consistently tending to your needs. They are the best at adjust the heat from the coals just so your pot doesn't dry out and lose heat suddenly.
Environment was just great. Not sweaty from all the heat due to the ACs. Compared to their previous location, this is way better.
Payment was fast and major credit cards are accepted (excluding...
Read moreA must try place for fans of fish head steamboat. The gastronomic journey begins with selecting a steamboat broth type of your choice. Being our first visit, we opted for the classic traditional broth, even though we were tempted to try out the more exotic sounding Sour & Spicy Soup set. As it turned out, the Traditional Soup broth was the best choice for a late hour meal. Added to the Soup were a delicious array of traditional steamboat ingredients like quails eggs, black ear fungus, bean curd skins and a variety of yummy meat balls with cheese-stuffed sliced beancurd as well. Without question, the star ingredient was the plate of fried fish head cuts (very fresh, tender and meaty chunks), complemented by the appetite whetting crispy fried wanton which was pre-cooked and could be enjoyed as is. The lovely rich but mild broth was enhanced by being simmered, not by a gas burner, but with traditional charcoal embers imparting a smoky and nostalgic punch to the flavour profile. 5-stars all around for the delicious food and the attentive and...
