After many meals of pies and fish & chips, we were all craving some hearty Asian good. That's when we walked past this Korean restaurant specialising in soups.
We entered with anticipation but was indicated via sign language that they did not have a high chair. So we left and walked around the area a bit more, but our hunger influenced our decision to just have our toddler sit on the bench along the wall.
We decentered the restaurant and sat along the wall. The interior was quite clean and we noticed the instructions written high on the opposite wall, detailing how to enjoy the various soups. So we decided to order one of each type.
The beef bulgogi arrived first and it was really good, but my daughter noticed that the mushrooms (on the menu) was missing and she was really looking forward to that. The second soup was the lamb, it came with a dipping sauce. The soup had a nice strong lamb flavour. The last soup was the mixed pork which did not look anything like what's in the picture. The soup only had one kind of meat and it tasted like beef, a bit chewy as well. It disappointed my son since he wanted the pig ears and offals.
Overall, the flavours of the soups were good, but the mixed pork soup either did not come or showed up in a different format. The lady (owner I assumed) also looked a bit grumpy, possibly not expecting children at...
Read morePhenomenal Korean restaurant! K SOUP is possibly by far the only soup restaurant that gives massive portions of pork bones in their soup. Not only are the pork bones large in size but they actually contain an abundance of meat on them. All their soups contain more meat/seafood than actual soup itself and this is evident as the soup is more concentrated, making it packed full of flavour!
You get a small plate of side dishes which contains a small portion of both cabbage and radish kimchi, however, the radish kimchi I got was two big chunks of it, not sure if someone didn't cut or slice them or it was their intention to serve it like that. Either way, the kimchi itself had good flavour to it with good heat from the chilies and the usual zesty flavour from the ferment.
The place is quite small, as is most of the restaurants located on Upper Queen Street, and it's open for very long for lunch (last kitchen service is before 2pm). Service was average as upon walk in no staff greeted or directed you so you wouldn't know whether you are to wait to be seated or order first and then find a seat. The place is quite busy so it's best to make a dedicated trip if you want to try their menu and optimal time is around 12pm to 1pm for lunch, otherwise after a certain time, staff will...
Read moreNo greetings; we had to find a table ourselves. No instructions on how to order, so I had to place the order at the counter.
The only highlight is the kimchi. Everything else was disappointing. Each dish was seasoned differently, and none were good. The fish cake soup was too salty. The sizzling chicken was bland. The pork and kimchi soup tasted more like tomato soup. The flounder was underwhelming.
We spent $87, but only got two side dishes for four people: cabbage kimchi and radish kimchi. No one offered refills.
The soup bowls weren’t filled to the top, and the sizzling chicken portion was laughably small. The flounder was a pan fried version and put it on a hot plate.
The toilet situation was appalling. After entering the door marked "toilet," we found a pile of raw fish in a sink right next to the bathroom door. My daughter was disgusted and couldn't enjoy her meal afterwards.
I don't understand the 4.7 rating for this place. It was a terrible experience, and we will not...
