I didn't have a chance to eat at the restaurant but I do not feel invited to do so after a very unpleasant and distressing encounter with one of female staff on Wednesday this week. As a disabled person I had an acute emergency and needed to use the WC. I could see it being accessible from outside the restaurant with a keypad and a pin and a note that stated it cost 4chf. I had money with me and asked (who appeared with her!arrogance to be) the unpleasant lady to let me use wc. She refused 3 times. She said that they were "closed" (opening in few minutes) and that it was not a public wc. My three times literally BEGGING HER to use the wc REPEATING to her the MEDICAL EMERGENCY evoked zero understanding in her. I felt humiliated. I had hard time understanding how human heart could be so cruel. . No pity even though she saw my distressed face. She informed me that there was a PIN CODE to the toilet door and that she did not remember it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. She said wc was for clients and I wasnt one since they were not yet opened so there was no option to buy a cup of coffee. I opened my wrist and showed her SWISS FRANCS I was tightly clinging to - in all anger that was raising in me - provoked by her firm and cold refusals and sadness that soon I would have found myself in a situation, of literally, not controlling my gut's action. When this restaurant employee saw Swiss FRANCS she asked me with happy face: "you want to pay? Oh then I remember!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!the PIN CODE to the wc door" She took my 4CHF and let me in to the outside restaurant wc. After this, the next day I made a research with several other restaurants in the Berner Oberland region. I wanted to see other restaurants reaction facing same scenario. I told these restaurants that I was not going to buy anything but I wanted to use toilet and I was prepared to pay for it. Not one of them refused, not one of them wanted my Swiss FRANCS, not one of them was rude to me just like this Aare Restaurant employee. This visit to Aare Restaurant wc was a traumatic event I will have hard time forgetting on both human level and commercial level (it seems that!the State subvention covers tourists toilet usage) . I do not wish anyone WITHOUT DISABILITY to be spoken to that dismissively, arrogantly and with lack of respect As I WAS SPOKEN TO BY AARE...
Read moreI decided to visit this restaurant because there were many reviews claiming it to be the best Korean food restaurant in Switzerland, or even in Europe. During my about three-week trip around Europe, I didn't visit any other Korean restaurants, but I heard that many Korean restaurants in Europe serve fusion dishes mixed with other Asian cuisines. This place is not only delicious but also the closest to authentic Korean food, making it highly recommended for non-Korean tourists.
I missed the unique spiciness of Korean food, so I ordered the "Mariniert mit Chilli sauce und Gemuse (제육볶음)", a pork dish popular among Korean men, and the "Stew with Kimchi, pork, and tofu (김치찌개)", a common Korean dish. Both were delicious, and the kimchi stew, in particular, tasted like what you'd find at a Korean snack bar (분식점). Although I'm Korean, I can't handle spicy food well. But this was just spicy enough to feel a bit of heat without causing sweat. It might have helped that I had it with rice and beer, but even non-Koreans curious about Korean food could give it a try.
The most satisfying dish was the "Marinierte Reiskuchen mit Fischkuchen (떡볶이)", or thr "Ddeokbokki" I ordered additionally. Though the portion wasn't large, the ratio of rice cakes to fish cakes was good, and you could add ramen noodles which are similar to cup noodles. Ddeokbokki is one of the most beloved snacks in Korea, and it's just as delicious as what you'd find in Korean snack bars. It is less spicy than two dishes I mentioned above, making it highly recommendable to non-Koreans.
I arrived before the restaurant got crowded and had a pleasant meal with friendly jokes from the owner. It was surprising to see many non-Korean customers along with Korean ones. The Korean BBQ dish, "Samgyeopsal (삼겹살)", seemed very popular and it looked like they served cabbage instead of lettuce as a side vegetable. For reference, this place uses kimchi from 'Jonggajip,' a well-known Korean F&B company.
Lastly, we walked along the riverside path from the Interlaken Ost station to the restaurant. Walking along this quiet, beautiful path, away from the busy main street full of tourist shops, is also part of this...
Read moreOn family vacation with 16 of us all staying up in Wengen above Lauterbrunnen. 10 of us ended up at Aare Korean BBQ one afternoon after a visit to the Aare Gorge (Aareschlucht) in Meiringen. We were all hungry and wanted something different. Aare Korean BBQ had solid reviews so we walked from the train station in Interlaken. We had a great meal and a great time. We were arrived after the busy lunch time in the middle of the week so there was plenty of seating. We sat down and ordered some pitchers of beer and looked over the menu. Our server was a young woman who was very nice. At some point a Korean man came over to help her and answer questions. We didn't realize it at the time, but this man was the owner. His name (at least for us Americans) is Alex. Alex ended up making the lunch even better by making meal suggestions, teaching a couple of our younger family members how to cook on the Korean BBQ in the table and just having friendly banter. At first, we couldn't tell if he was serious because he made comments with a straight face. Eventually, we realized that he was playing around with us. He was very funny and we exchanged jokes and had plenty of laughs. We took our time eating since we had nowhere to be and between checking on other tables, he would come back and talk with us. The food was solid but Alex made the experience better with his personality and suggestions. After we finished, most of us wanted to continue to walk around town. Two of our mom's who are 80+ didn't feel like walking and wanted to just head to the train station to head back up to Wengen. Rather then let them take a cab or call an Uber, Alex offered to give them a ride to the station in his van. We all went outside and took some photos (one is attached) and then he shuttled our moms to the train station. It was a very nice way to cap off a great lunch. I'd highly recommend...
