It was early morning in Bath, and I needed breakfast. I wasn’t sure where to go, so I took a chance on this place, and I’m glad I did!

The staff were welcoming and quickly set up a table for me. As soon as I decided what I wanted, they were right on it, all while making sure other guests were happy with their meals and keeping the outdoor area and tables clean for new customers. Yes, that’s standard, but the pace they were working at, and how quietly they managed it, despite carrying loads of plates and cutlery, was genuinely impressive. You usually expect a bit of noise with all that, but the calm atmosphere was a really nice touch. The only thing I’ll note is that a couple of staff members seemed a bit moody, but that could’ve been down to a long week or just an off day.

When the food arrived, I can honestly say it was one of the best breakfasts I’ve had. The bacon looked crispy and was exactly how I’d asked, crispy on the edges but still soft. The eggs had perfectly runny yolks, and the bread was both crispy and soft, making the whole meal easy and enjoyable to eat. Not a single struggle!

Without a doubt, I’ll be coming back if I’m ever in the area again around breakfast time. It was just delightful.

And as a side note, considering I live in London, I thought the prices were totally reasonable. No...

Good location, good coffee albeit expensive. 4 of us had breakfast - 2 pancakes, 1 kingsmead breakfast , 1 omelette. The toppings were good with plenty of blueberries and yogurt however the 3 pancakes were very small for the large £9.50 price tag. Again, the omelette was good but could have had more toppings, especially for the £9.50 price that. The kingsmead breakfast (their biggest breakfast) was very lacklustre. Everything was unfortunately lukewarm and, for lack of a better word, stale. The hash brown was cold and stiff, the 2 bacon was cold, stiff and extremely salty, the 2 sausages were better than a catering sausage however lacked any seasoning and were what I would describe as ‘meaty’. The 2 eggs were cooked well, toast was pre butter but good bread and beans and mushrooms are beans and mushrooms. Very very underwhelming for roughly £14.

Our bill came to £70 for 4 breakfast, 3 coffees l, a tea and an apple juice which if cooked well, good quality and good portions would have been steep but not as eye watering. In its current state, eye watering and disappointing. Would be...

Sadly very poor quality. It used to be a great place back in the day but now not so. The dreaded pancakes, see other reviews, were not fresh cold, dry, hard and even the smothering of yoghurt and blueberries did nothing to add flavour. At least they didnt charge us for them. The scrambled egg, and beans were uninspiring, the hashbrowns tasteless and soggy, the one slice of bacon was not bad but left a bad taste in the mouth when we found out it cost £3.25! Even the waitress seemed embarrassed about that one although she was nice enough. Realised too late should have gone for full English with more items and lower price tag. Even the tea was weak although left to steep for normal amount of time and served in small coffee cups weirdly. It was the only place we could find with free tables after searching for a while, guess we found out why. All in all disappointing and not a great reminder of its past glory days. Don't like leaving bad reviews but the experience...

It's just ok and no more. The staff are efficient without ever engaging with us as customers. I felt they did and said exactly what they were trained to do. There wasn't a feeling that they appreciated the fact that we pay their wages. The ham & mushroom omelette was more of a mushroom & trace of ham omelette, with little in the way of flavour or seasoning. It was presented nicely but on a marble effect table, which has the effect of making the plate, and food, go cold more quickly. The nice litte pot of tea will definitely go cold quickly on that surface. Maybe placemats/coasters would solve that. I felt it was overpriced for what I got, in the region of £12/13 & tea was extra. I know the location is in a city, looking on to a beautiful square, but I expected better.

However, this is a 3.5-star review. The place is cosy, prices are OK for Bath (which is as expensive as London!) i.e.£8 for a classic, £10 for a big full-English breakfast, and staff are nice and smiley. But they failed, 4 times, on the eggs. Over-cooked. Good quality sliced bread, well-seasoned tomato and bacon and sausage were good too. All a bit dry though. Tinned beans. Ah! Difficult to find fresh, home-made ones. They can improve the display of the dish. But I'm happy to come back and try something else. There is potential here for 5 stars and would be delighted to give them.
