Read moreA tale of two visits.
I visited here two Mondays running, around the same time of day for each.
There were fourteen other people already there on my first visit. We were seated quickly but it did take a while for us to be served - not an issue, we were in no rush. The staff working that day were all older and flitted about here, there and everywhere.
It took around fifteen minutes for our order to arrive - two rounds of toast, a tea and cappuccino - by which time the place had filled up a little. The people who sat at the table next to us were quite possibly the worst diners I have ever encountered. How the staff dealt with them is beyond me. They were absolutely vile. I personally would have told - not asked, they didn't deserve the respect of being asked - to leave, however, the staff handled them exceptionally, so much so I commented to the one who appeared to be in charge how impressed I was with his handling of the situation.
The drinks were hot, and I loved the teapot, but the toast was a little disappointing; very white as it if he had been popped in the toaster and popped back out again immediately after. It was edible though and I know not everyone likes it as crispy as I do. They were having a bad enough morning as it was so I wasn't going to ask for it to be popped back in the toaster.
Price wise the cost was a lot cheaper than I was expecting it to be.
The following Monday we visited again; this time the toast was cooked better, however the staff - two younger people - were very sullen, slovenly and we all got the impression they had other places they would rather be.
One thing I really loved is they had tables which would seat four, or six people with just two seated at them. When bigger parties came in they could have asked customers to move to smaller tables yet they never did, instead turning the bigger parties away. Not good business sense for them in one way as it meant they were losing out on taking money, yet good in another as there is nothing worse than feeling as though you are somewhere you shouldn't be.
Would I go back? Yes. Not sure I would tell others to go there specifically in case they went on a day like our second visit, but if you go in with an open mind you shouldn't be...
Read moreIn response to owner's reply - Unfortunately, the customers who sat themselves were 4 elderly customers (they initially sat by the gate at the entrance, then we actually pointed out the sign to them, they got up to wait, but it took so long that they eventually sat themselves down again at a different table further along under the covered area)... we were two younger individuals with three dogs. We did wait where the sign was and were seated by a waitress (you can check because we signed in on your tablet by the door which you use to take customers names and phone numbers). So no, that doesn't explain slow service and the fact we were not given a menu. Moreover, I did go into the restaurant to complain about the prices and a blonde waitress simply pointed to the prices on the menu and no offer to take off the service charge was made. Also, thank you for your alternative milk price explanation, but that wasn't the shocking bit really (actually very normal to pay extra for it) - it was the black americano...
Got to say our visit was incredibly disappointing. Service was incredibly slow and at no point when ordering were we given a menu. Eventually we ended up ordering a soy cappuccino and a black americano, but once the bill came through, we discovered it was very over priced. The cappuccino was £3.50 + 40p for the soy, and to our absolute bewilderment, the black americano was the same price (£3.50). I don't mind paying a bit more for a particularly good coffee but the truth is, it was very mediocre. On top of this a service charge was then added to our bill with out us knowing... Particularly frustrating given just how poor the service was. So in the end, we ended up paying over £8 for our two coffees and poor service. Felt like we'd been completely scammed, especially since we weren't even given a menu to look at before ordering. Absolutely wouldn't recommend, there are far better placed in Bourton to...
