Read moreI am truly shocked and disappointed with a recent visit. For background purposes, this is my first time ever writing a comment, but felt the very important need to do so given what I witnessed and experienced.
First, the music is unnecessarily loud. Knowing that 60 to 75% of their customers are working on their computers, they maintain the music this loud and choose to play heavy metal. The neighborhood is one with many young working professionals and I wish that they would be more considerate to this via their music choice and sound level.
Second, I was truly shocked when an employee (perhaps the owner) walked up to a young man working on his computer next to me. It's important to note that this gentleman was a person of color. I have never in my years of working in coffee shops across the United States and world have I seen an employee step out from behind the counter and walk up to someone sitting at a table to ask them what they would like to order. The worker went straight to him, after briefly making eye contact with me. The young man next to me placed his order. via the hand machine that the employee was holding. The employee walked away and then the young man looked at me and said, "Wow that has never happened to me before". I asked more about what had happened as my headphones had been in. He described what I am describing to you now, and he shared that he is a regular at the spot.
Is the business that desperate for money? What if their friend was going to be arriving soon? I often wait to order until my friend or person I am meeting arrives. I am an advocate for businesses that are sensitive and aware. I want the best for businesses, but given what I heard and everything I am reading in the comment bar, my instinct is now confirmed. In conclusion, the behavior was very unprofessional, greedy, and displays poor...
Read moreHad the lox sandwich - not likely to be what you are looking for when you order lox and bagel. Default starts with an un-toasted everything bagel and they top it with pickled onions (?), chunks of tomatoes (not slices), bland lox, capers, and TONS of lemon juice. Why lemon juice? The capers should do the job, right? Iâm not sure I get that lemon part at all. I understand the hipster inclination to put a âspinâ on something traditional people like (âhey, letâs put PICKLED onions on there instead!â), but all that lemon flavoring seemed out of left field. Iâm from NYC and have eaten lox and bagels my whole life - Iâve seen some folks dill it up and a few other variations, but this strongly lemon flavored bagel with lox was a first and last for me. It wasnât cheap ($13) for a whole, but not unreasonable if it was good...but it wasnât very good. Bagel was super dense (like most Texas bagels) and trying to eat it un-toasted was more like exercise than dining. Counter service was ok, but I donât think we were hip enough for the cashier - she wasnât very friendly. The coffee was good and the space was pretty cool / apropos of where it is - hipster town east 5th warehouse area. It was pretty fun to be there, with a dog sitting beside our table and itâs owner talking and gesturing wildly to himself nearby. Decor was recycled warehouse style - very cool and fun. A girl came in with a half shirt and a high waisted skirt made from what appeared to be a car windshield sun-screen; the cashier seemed to be friends with her. We wonât go back but itâs worth a visit just for the coffee and the Austin vibe. Wear your car windshield sunscreen skirt...
