I was invited to a small celebration (about 10 people) for a friend's birthday at Cape Bottle Room. We were surprised that they demanded a $10/per reservation fee for a Sunday afternoon, which was required to be paid in advance. When we got there, the place was empty. The first person there was asked to run a tab for the entire group. She declined. The wine was good, but the $39 meat/cheese board was very subpar and difficult to enjoy. Service was marginal. When various people checked out, we were all charged an automatic 20% because we were associated with the large table. That would have been just fine BUT THEY DID NOT CREDIT THE $10 PER PERSON RESERVATION FEE. So, we paid an extra $120 on top of the 20% tip for marginal food/service.
But the worse was the bathroom situation. The bathroom had a shower in it. At first, it seemed nice, but I soon noticed that there was a huge clump of hair on the floor on the ground just out side the shower, which was about 4 feet from the toilet. So gross. I would have taken a picture of it but I did not think that I needed to take my phone to the bathroom with me.
Very disappointed. I will not return. This is the unfortunate state of affairs in Austin. All hype, subpar or disgusting everything.
Addendum - Since I posted my review, the owners have reached out and have offered to rectify our experience. I am glad that they have done so. I have learned that the bathroom situation was not in their total control, since it was a shared bathroom with other businesses. As I said in my original post, the wine was good. I believe that the the owners have learned from this situation and will make necessary changes. Again, the wine was good. I am very pleased that the owner cared so much to reach and...
Read moreEvery wine here is from South Africa--kind of a bold move opening a niche so narrow, but I've sampled several SA wines through my wife (CMS Cert Somm & WSET diploma) so I was kind of excited to check this place out solo with my better half out of town. Meagan was great suggesting the Chenin Blanc as my first glass. The feel of the place is industrial which works well as the lighting used doesn't overpower and you feel a little like you're near a cellar. There is a projector TV on one wall and they tune to whatever sports or what not are on...I happened to stop by during the Vikings/Giants playoff game and sat near a speaker to hear the sound (which is low enough to not hinder conversation, but just barely high enough to hear if you focus on it). There is even Casita Cold Brew and Wanderlust Sangria on tap and I've seen some cheese/charcuterie boards go out. I finished with a Malbec and then moved on as I had an event nearby to attend. Overall great experience--service, vibe, wine ( I need to return to try a board)...I'll be back--this is simply a great place to drink wine without feeling like you don't belong, if you know what I...
